My friend is due with her first child in a few months. She doesn't have insurance and is trying to budget and save for her delivery. She is white and her fiance is Dominican. The clinics tell them that they can't give them a price until after the baby is born. They understand that they can't get an exact price, but they won't even give them ball-park figures. Has anyone delivered on the North Coast? If so, where and how much. She plans on having the baby naturally. Thanks in advance.

Hey Corey My gf just had our baby boy earlier this month at Gregorio Hernandez hospital in Puerto Plata we where facing the same dilema as her insurance wouldnt cover it as she just signed up for it months before she got pregnant but I took out another insurance it was more expensive like 2200 pesos a month but I doubt this will worK for her as she is an extranjera for her and was very nervous as I was quoted prices of 50,000 pesos or more plus I am an extranjero anyway so I was paying more I assume. Luckily woith the insurance they couldnt do anything to screw me over and my gf had a c section and all I had to pay was 200 pesos to the hospital and 3000 pesos to the other doctors that assisted. With out insurance shes at the mercy of the hospital. Tell her to check CMC in Sosua they might be able to help but I am afraid without insurance shes going to pay. One thing I am so glad I took out the other insurance for my gf.

We paid 14,000 RD$ back in 2003 when my son was born. C-section w/out having insurance at that time. Place was "Clinica Dr. Defo(e)" in Puerto Plata.

She could have it in the maternity gov. clinic in Montellano It is called SEGURO. They are expert about giving birth, so many kids everydays. She should have to see the doctor first, get blood test, and have a sanographia. They shall check if there is no complication. Then she will share a room with someone, there is no color tv. It shall cost around US$200 or less.

good luck with natural birth, this is not a popular option in DR.
the cost in a private clinic will be around 1000 dollars, sans insurance. public hospital way cheaper but more traumatic, i think.

Corey,
As she is an Extranjera I doubt that she will be comfortable in a public hospital. She could do it, but might not be comfortable. I suggest that she go to a private clinic and I have no idea what those costs are. Where does her doctor usually do his or her deliveries? The doctor should be able to give her ballpark figures. When I was pregnant with my son and at first planning to deliver in the DR, my doctor gave me all of the price info.
As far as natural birth, please tell her to discuss with her physician what she desires. She has to be vocal and strong willed, that is of course, if she desires a natural delivery because of her belief system regarding birth and not because of cost.
My best advice to her would be to go to the hospital as late as possible, which is very hard especially for a first time mom as they mistake early labor for the full blown action a lot of the time.
Good luck to her.

I agree whitn Ms King and the doctors prefer C sections as its faster and more $$ to be made but expct to pay from 35-55000 pesos.

Also in case anything is wrong the baby or complications at birth or anything she would want to be in a private clinic as they will take very good care of her and the baby.

By the way my wife had her kids in public hospital and everything was perfect !! But no color TV. 2 per rooms usually and FREE. I always leave a good tip. She was surended by family menbers, this is very important. We brought home made food, fresh juices and love. They have a lot of experience since usually families are giving birth to a lot of kids in the DR.
