I would like to get some opinions on renting a car and driving it around the island perhaps along the coast. Will I run into people trying to rob me? Will I be able to purchase gas easily? etc

Our friends rented their car from Avis and encountered no problems touring the island, other than gas prices. However when you do rent a car make sure you go over the car with them. Make sure they note every scratch, bump, dent, etc.... And as the previous poster stated take out the full insurance coverage...It can save you in the end...Happy travels...

If you're not aware of the road rules you can get into a jamb. Even a fender bender that's not your fault can cost you a wad of cash. And heaven forbid you cause an accident and/or injuries. The policia can confiscate your passport and empty your bank account.

As odd as it may sound, some say "drive away fast" from an accident scene to avoid being milked for every peso you got.
You might be fine driving and you might not. Just a friendly warning......
