Generally speaking it is best to get a passport, keep it safe at all times.
From Canada or the States, proof of citizenship-Original birth certificate and another picture ID will do.

Check with your airlines. They are not always current with the "official" requirements, and unless you meet "their" requirements, you won't be boarding the plane.
