From today's Sosua News:

[h=5]Tourism is the first source of income for the Dominican Republic. In second place comes the money that Dominicans who live and work abroad send home. But due to the economic crisis, many Dominicans in Spain and the United States became unemployed. Many Dominicans therefore return back home.[/h][h=5]In New York, the cost of living is higher than in Sos?a. In New York, the electricity, gas and rent have to be paid. In Sos?a this is often different. Even the inhabitants of Sos?a are largely dependent on the money sent from abroad. According to a spokesman of the Western Union office in Sos?a, which many Dominicans use to receive their money, the number of remittances decreased by half. Of course, many foreign lovers send money via Western Union to their Dominican girlfriend or boyfriend, but that covers only a small part of total amount. The Dominicans sending money from Spain and the USA to Sos?a, cover more than 90% of the total. For the economic crisis in Spain and to a lesser extent in the USA, therefore many families in Sos?a live in misery.[/h]
