I saw people selling branches of this tree in the streets in Santo Domingo.
Flor de libertad o Moringa Latin name Moringa oleifera
This tree grows wild in the countryside and a lot of local people know just how good it is. Here is some information Protein 42%, Calcium 125%, Magnesium 61%, Potassium 41%, Iron 71%, Vitamin A 272%, and Vitamin C 22%
They are saying this is a tree that would solve malnutrition. Maybe everyone should grow one in their back yard.

I have never heard of a plant species with a protein factor of 42%. A picture of it would definitely be helpful. Thanks for the info. Maybe replace the plantains with this plant and the brain issues might slowly get resolved.

you can eat leaves, seeds, pods and roots. but the protein content is not that high: about 9gr (per 100) in a leaf and 2 in pods.
here is a link to wiki: Moringa oleifera - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nagua, Dominican Republic.- The boom in sales unleashed by reports of the health benefits of the plant Moringa or libertad (freedom), known for its protein content, and medicinal properties among other attributes has sparked hope in and around the Atlantic coast city,
The plant, which has piqued interest locally and abroad, spurred various business leaders to launch scientific research on its properties and its potential as a profitable crop.

The article is in DR1 News and the original is in the Listin Diario.

Apparently this is being grown in industrial quantities in the area around Nagua.

My daughter's father in law is a well known expert in natural medicine (Ing. Nelson Rodriguez) and he spent some time this morning telling me about it. There are pills, creams, and oils as well. This is an interesting plant if it is 25% as wonderful as presented.

It is in the diet of Cuban school children..

I took capsules 3 times a day for 2 weeks and it gave me the jitters. However, I've known others who swear by it,
especially for diabetes. It grows very well here. Some is growing around the turistica road (ruta panoramica as it's called now).
Not much taste to it, but packed full of nutrients. I have some left if anyone wants some in capsules, ground leaves.
Ground in a coffee grinder....

It is a favorite vegetables for the people living in southern parts of India and Srilanka. It is widely cultivated for its pods. It is highly tastier and has very good aroma. Some of my friends brought here good variety of seeds to grow and ship from DR. But the climate is not suitable for getting good quality pods. But the leaves are very good. Leaves are usually stir fried. It is not recommended to eat the leaves for the dinner because it is very hard to digest. It is prohibited by APHIS to ship to US. But in Hawaii, it is grown for leaves and shipped to Canada.
In country medicine its gum and flowers are used as aphrodisiac. We used to cook and our local friends used to ridicule earliar but gradually they developed a taste for it.

My boss started a moringa farm a year ago.. They actually sell moringa in capsules. They dry the leaves, and ground them and fill capsules. I have a problem with thinning hair, I started taking 9 capsules a day 3 capsules 3x's a day and within 3 weeks my hair was growing in and my nails were strong.. was crazy.. I ran out of the capsules.. I have some on the way and will restart it. My boss lives in Barahona and if you are interested you can pm me for his email i'm not sure how he is selling them..

Like most of these things, in small quantities the amount of energy put into picking, preparing, producing something worth eating for the energy (which is what people presume these things would be good for, the poor with not enough goodness in their diet) exceeds the quantity of goodness you get out of them.great on industrial scale, but counter productive on a domestic scale.

The % are based on your body needs not on % in the plant. For example if you needed 5 classes of water a day and you drank 10 you would have had 200% of your water needs for the day.
