From today's Sosua News:

[h=5]Four years ago, one morning it had suddenly disappeared: the cast-bronze statue of King Neptune.[/h][h=5]It was located on a large rock in front of the beach at the Malec?n in Puerto Plata. The statue was always visible from the Malec?n, even with bad weather, and was considered as the mascot of the port. But metal thieves had struck and cut the statue in pieces and took it with them. Fortunately, the police could trace the thieves, because even seasoned metal thieves can not keep their identities secret for long. The cut into pieces statue was temporarily stored behind the police station. After much protest actions and campaigns of indignant residents of Puerto Plata, the statue, thanks to donors, could be soldered back together again after four years. Monday, July 30 the Air Force sent a helicopter to put the statue on top of the rock on his pedestal again. But the statue was too heavy, the helicopter was able to put the statue upright but couldn't lift it from the ground. Now we are waiting on a larger and stronger helicopter to lift King Neptune back to his rightful place.[/h]

Great News - I was wondering what had happened! The "Wee " Boy on the round-a-bout is still there but it looks as if it is cast resin and not metal.

Perhaps Neptune will bring better fortunes to POP!

why they don't just hire the guys who stole it the first place to bring it back.
it is so hilarious, some thieves where able to steal it without getting seen and
now the Dominican Air Force can not bring the statue back on its place
because it is so heavy?!?!

Funny - just release the thieves under the prevision that they must bring the statue
back on its original place ;-)

I was there last week and saw the helicopter try to lift it. It was quite a show. They had it over by the Barcelo in a big field. It was hilarious. They did finally get it on the flatbed truck and hauled it down the road.
