Hi folks!
I failed to find Cockatoo for sale in DR (well found one adult for 5000$ - really?). They have many offers in US from 400$ to 1200$ for a bird and i found two owners who are willing to ship a bird to me, but seems like bringing a bird here is something complicated if even possible. Does anyone have any information on this? Bird will be shipped from Miami and i am close to POP.

PS: i know cockatoos can be very loud, biting, plucking etc and they need attention - well i am always home to take care of that. I want cockatoo and thats it! Lol

Enlighten me please on what to do and who to ask?

Thanks!

I had a beautiful Moluccan we raised from practically an egg. When he (we didn't have it DNA sexed; we named her Lola, a "her") hit real puberty he became literally unhandleable, literally drawing blood. We ended up trading him back to the breeder for an African gray.

They also have "dust" because their feathers have talc. They can be very, very messy. And LOUD. I mean LOUD!!!

We also had a Blue & Gold and a double yellow head Amazon at the time, for years, so we weren't rookies.

Maybe he was cranky because of his name.

Seriously, consider something else. They are beautiful but need experienced handlers. Amazons, Greys and Macaw's are much easier to deal with.

The ex still has them.

many folks have parrots here ...

I could almost say for sure that I have seen Cockatoos for sale here - at least I have seen them in captivity so someone is probably breeding them here.

There is a campaign to not trap and sell wild birds here but I suspect that there are breeders as well,

My neighbors in North carolina had a parrot.. do not know what kind . Amazon colors with a long tail and the same thing happened to him as CB related.. in the end, they bought him a mate and built them both a huge heated aviary!!! But WOW could they holler across the holler!

One more thing: they can live for 60+ years.

When you commit to a parrot, it's a lifetime commitment.

(I always thought a nice breeding aviary could be very successful in the DR...)

Yeah id like to do it one day, when i will have my house built ill make a walk in aviary, kinda like they have in Ocean World. I always wanted a zoo LOL i have 2 sphynx cats (with 4 kittens now) , pomeranian and Dogo Argentino already. Boy wish i find a way to get a breeding pair of Cockatoos! And im sure i will not stop on them.. ill get macaws and grays too. My daughter loves animals, so i hope after i pass away she will take care of old birdies

Awesome Aras

I failed to find Cockatoo for sale in DR (well found one adult for 5000$ - really?).

A friend bought Aras (macau), a pair was about 4,200 $.
He has four birds now in a wonderful very large aviary (stainless steel...) in his garden.

They have many offers in US from 400$ to 1200$ for a bird and i found two owners who are willing to ship a bird to me, but seems like bringing a bird here is something complicated if even possible. Does anyone have any information on this? Bird will be shipped from Miami and i am close to POP.

After much research, my friend dropped that option.
Also, beware of fraudsters in this business!

About ten years ago in Sosua there was a guy living in a custom built house up near the top of La Mulata. He was known as "Crazy Eddie". He was Swiss. He imported about 4 expensive birds and built a sort of house in his house for them. It had AC, ocean view, and an electric screen that would make it dark at night for sleeping.

One bird got sick and he flew it back with him to Switzerland First Class. Don't ask me how he did it, but he did.

He has since sold his house and moved to Thailand. Some of you might have known him from La Mulata.

I have a red and yellow macaw...Tania is " her" name. I would like to:
1) get her a mate (she is about 30 or so) her original mate died and getting her a new one is a complicated process involving two cages and a crate in between...Breeders in the states get an even number and let them pair off and then do blood tests to see about the homosexuals among the the pairs. These are then sexed and paired off, whether they like it or not.

2) sell her to a breeder or someone who will care for her and train her a bit more...she is really beautiful.

There is a guy in Jarabacoa who breeds them.

He owns or is the manager of a 5 star hotel on the malecon in SD during the week, and at weekends he comes home to his private zoo in Jarabacoa.

He has all kinds of parrots, cackatoos, ostriches, belgian deer, gorgeous paso finos, etc...

I used to train his dogs, and he is a super nice guy.

Incredible property as well.

I must be the liberal public education they receive that turns so many of them.

BelgianK is it "Marcel Rodriguez" you are referring to in Jarabacoa? It would be quite a coincidence if there were more than one Ostrich breeder up there.

There is woman called Andrea in la mulata, i was in her aviary, she has macaws and wants to breed them, she might be interested. You can find her number in dominicancentral adds, she sells birds. I saw at least 5 macaws in her huge aviary but seems like they all are same sex, may be Tania will find a boyfriend among them :)
