Yes, fortunate for Haiti this time. Was the earthquake in Haiti also providence? If if wasn't, why not?

Have the Cordillera Central been renamed to "providence?"

:cheeky:

Mountains cause a lot of friction and steer storms. That is the #1 reason why so few hurricanes have really whacked the DR even though it's in the direct path.

It's still providence

Yes, everyone is praying hard that it misses them and hits some other unfortunates. Love thy neighbour and all that.

No, it's about knowing who is in control, and yes, that includes disasters where many people die. BTW, we all do (die). And when we do, it's not important at all if we died after a long, great life, softly in our sleep, after a destructive disease, in a car accident, or in a massive earthquake. Life before death is only the prelude to eternity.

We're blessed and cursed by the natural forces that are responsible for our existence. Take the sun as an example. We are both sustained and killed by it a little every day.

Nonsense. When you are dead, you are dead. Game over. Nothing else.

How can anyone ascribe supernatural purpose to the natural, random forces that define the path of a killer storm, without implying that it's sparing one group of people at the expense of another?

Maybe most folks who believe this sort of thing are not so twisted, but some of the nonsense I'm seeing on Facebook where people have been "praying" for the storm to spare the DR while making callous comments about Haiti being "un dedo malo que se le pega to'" makes me wonder.

Thank the mountains, thank god, or who or whatever...Just thank you we did not see more of the storm. Here in SDQ some wind and some rain but that is all. Tomorrow we shall see.

DR *NOT* in direct path of major storms

Mountains cause a lot of friction and steer storms. That is the #1 reason why so few hurricanes have really whacked the DR even though it's in the direct path.
Sorry, no, and no.
It is a misconception that the DR is in the direct path of the Tropical Storms/hurricanes, and it is a misconception that the central mountains play a role in shifting the hurricanes away from the DR (unles the TS/H has ALREADY hit the DR).

The reality is that the VAST majority of TS/H are WAY north of the DR by the time they reach the longitude of the island...most start out near Africa at about the same "height" (latitude) as the DR (only somewhat lower) and as they generally advance in West/NW direction, by the time they reach the longitude of the DR they are already way North (much "higher") than the DR...Many also tend to make a sharp turn North after which they continue moving almost due North before they ever get close to the DR.
The TS/H that actually "hit" the DR are in fact the exception...and they are VERY "few and far between".
OTOH, the major TS/H are HUGE systems (enough to cover several big islands simultaneously), so as long as one passes in the general vicinity, the island gets at least a lot of rain and stronger than average winds...
The following thread discusses this amply:

I will link below the complete storm track map from 2 recent years, 2011 and 2008. See for yourselves, it is VERY clear:
