On a similar note to my previous thread, I would like to comment on my night out to the Cinema last night.

I havent been to the Cinema for a loooong time and when I did it was empty day time showing of the Lion King with my daughter, last night my husband and I made time for date night and went to see Prometheus in 3D. The evening was ruined (for me) by the constant shouting out loud and full blown conversation throughout the bloody film. I asked my husband if it was annoying him and he didnt have a clue what i was talking about lol.

We spoke about it after and he said "Its just people having a good time, they are just living their lives"

I didnt say that he was right or wrong, I just explained that whatever I do I automatically take other people into consideration. I didnt go out tonight to listen to them screaming in my ear with their stupid comments all night.

I just think the world would be a very uncomfortable place if we all just walked round doing exactly what we pleased with zero consideration for anyone or anything, but then Im not exactly a rule breaker and am not very "fly by the seat of my pants kinda gal"

I dont think I am much different to many ex-pats, but are we just up-tight or is this type of behavior wrong.

Thoughts please.

Again, eso se llama mal educacion. Those people weren't taught that from there parents, so they go about there lives just this way.

You really have no choice, in general, other than to accept these fallacies and try to associate yourself with more educated Dominicans; which do exist by the way. I know of many personally who laugh at these stories.

One time my uncle was asking someone if they knew where the Encanto was (Encato is somewhat like La Sirena). The guy responded by saying that it is located en la San Luis. My uncle then asked him if he could be more specific as that is a street that crosses many others; the guy said, "eso esta por ahi, por la sanluis", again my uncle reiterated that La San Luis is a long street, could he provide a corss-street. The man's response was to insult my Uncle: "Pero tu si eres bruto". My uncle just laughed it off. Which is what I would have done too.

It has nothing to do with upbringing or social status, Dominicans just know how to have a good time and how to enjoy each others company, an extremely social race. A night out together to sit in silence probably doesn't make any sense at all to most, unless with your partner who you live with 24/7 and could do with the timeout.
no, I don't think a night at the cinema is sufficient reason to sit in silence in DR.
Some can be a nightmare in situations where a little consideration for others is required besides that, have you even stood in a check in line at the airport? Now that is bad manners, disrespectful and annoying. they don't seem to understand that people are standing in a line waiting, this concept of a queue is unheard of to most in DR.

But expecting a Dominican to sit in silence is like expecting a fish to stop swimming, impossible and if they did they would probably die.

when in london i went to see troy with my colombian friend who is 198cm tall, weighs over 100kg and has a body covered with tattoos. we watched a bit and then started to discuss the stupidity of american movies in general and this one in particular. we giggled at lousy, cowardly and pathetic paris, we giggles some more at achilles and we had great time. occasionally, there was a hush from the seat behind us but we thought nothing of it.
the movie finally came to an end, the lights came on and i sprang from my chair while colombiano untangled himself from his tiny seat. a guy who was seating behind us started shouting at me for all our laughing and talking but he went more and more quiet as my friend got up and got up and kept getting up to turn around and look at the poor guy. brit, clearly distressed finally managed it was nice talking to you before he broke into run. :)

so see? it happens everywhere. and who is right? the biggest one, of course! :) ;) :)

AAAAHHH DV8 Americans are fat, spoiled lazy, cant handle adversity, our movies are stupid. Im starting to think you have something against the USA . Keep this up I may stop drinking Luksusova and send the economy of Poland into a tizzy.

Laura you are 100% correct. However since only you and a few expats may agree with you i would either drink at the theatre so you wont notice or go to a matinee.

Bronxboy I sure miss those days.

I NEVER enter a movie theatre w/o asking how many others are in there.

I go alone, in the afternoons, in order to enjoy myself quietly.
(also cheaper for the matinee - Srs discount)

Yes, I take a beer..... Jumbo

or just join in, you are, of course, in the DR....

quick story.
hmm, about ten or fifteen years ago(i dont remember when exactly) I went to the cinema with my old mum, to see the excorcist special edition movie. She had said that she wanted to see it.

about 30 minutes into the film, a girl across the way started shouting for help and collapsed onto the isle. gasping for breath and trying to call for help, she was crawling around on the floor.

My mum, unbeleivably, starts shouting at everyone to be quiet and ignore the girl, that she is a 'plant' and part of the movie experience.

I thought..er I don't think so, but my mum was adamant, 'please ignore her we want to watch the movie'

after a minute or two the paramedica came and took the girl who was having some asthma or panic attack....I was quite embarrassed in case anybody recognised me with my mum!

Living Alone on the Planet

"Its just people having a good time, they are just living their lives"
(...) with zero consideration for anyone or anything (...)
Thoughts please.

It's quite simple.
It's not lack of courtesy of education (although, that may help, of course).

It is a psychological problem:
Dominicans just can't imagine that there is another individual on the planet (except them). :alien:

Traffic, music volume, garbage come to mind...

In my neck of the woods (Punta Cana), if anyone starts talking or makes noise, the other people make him/her shut up. Then again, there's about a 40% expat / 60% dominican ratio in there which probably helps.

ha ha ha, sorry, i did not mean for you to take it personally, "american movie" is any of the silly hollywood stuff, regardless of the nationalities involved :)
still better than european cinema, by far. i have seen one lars von trier movie and i would rather eat a whole salami than watch any of his lousy films again. on the other hand i hear he did semi-porn production starring shia ledouche so i just may :)

Also keep in mind that if it's a movie theater filled with kiddies and a 3D? forget it! It's gonna
be noisy.

To me, it's the usual lack of respect that is indigenous to the Lat Am race. Their world revolves around them and they are oblivious that other people also inhabit it too.

The fact is that they don't know that their talking in the cinema is bothering you, or more's the point, they don't care.

It's like when they will stop in a doorway and have a chat with someone they know. They don't care that they are holding people up.

Have you seen them at an airport? When they exit that airport, there will be whole families coming to greet a passenger and hold up the rest of the passengers trying to exit.

They will sit at the bottom of the stairs, eating something. And everyone using the stairs has to get out of their way.

They do not consider others in supermarkets. They leave their trolleys blocking the aisles, so no one can pass.

If two people who know eachother are at the opposite ends of a bus, they will shout at one another rather than move closer together to have a conversation.

And yes, queueing etiquette is unheard of.

These are a few of my observations that are not only limited to the DR, but also Central and South America. But the strange thing is that this behaviour is tolerated by and large.

It's us expats that seem to have the problem!

Oh my, remind me to never go to a movie in DR, especially with Mr. AE. He'd end up yelling at someone to shut up and causing a bigger scene.

Like someone said, they don't even know they were bothering you.

first: avoid more serious movie with lots of dialogue. most people will not understand what's going on or will not keep up with subtitles so they will occupy themselves in other ways. chose something easy on the eye, like james bond. forget comedies too unless we are talking slipping on a banana skin kind of movies. translation is often poor, especially when it comes to play on words or references to popular history and media. you will be the only one laughing and that may feel little awkward. or anyone else will be laughing at which point you will feel like a fool :)

second: avoid kids movies. they are all dubbed in spanish, you will not understand what's going on and you will not keep up with the dialogue. i know what i'm talking about. i need subtitles (in english) to watch american (in every sense of the word) cartoons. everyone speaks way too fast, babbles, uses kid vocabulary or slang and i easily get lost. in addition there will be shrieking, shouting and laughing drowning all that you can understand in a stream of constant high pitched noise.

third: bring your winter coat, socks, woolly hat and gloves. it will be so cold you'll start losing feeling in your extremities within minutes. explains mess in dominican cinemas, people simply lose their grip on pieces of stone cold popcorn and start dropping things. and they will not notice since by 10 minute mark their brain is already pumping blood to most important internal organs like lungs (which can be heard) and hearts, leaving you feeling dizzy and confused. if you happen to be foolish enough to go and see one of them half a day long indie cinema reels you are sure to suffer severe frostbite and you are facing amputation.

Although I am well informed about the Dominican attitude towards garbage, I suspect, that the behaviour in cinemas could have been learned from Americans.
When a teenager I used to go to a cinema in an American barracks in Germany and was shocked how the cinema floor looked like when the movie was over....
