Santo Domingo is "posing" as Havana in the U.S. series Covert Affairs, S03 E07

Filmed on location in Zona Colonial and Malecon/Las Americas.

Though I could not find any record of this on the Internet, after seeing the episode and zooming on some frames you can clearly see 809 phone numbers, DR license plates, etc.

Nice...

I am just wondering how they got the "old" Cuban cars (the "classics") in there.

The Hotel scenes in Godfather II were filmed at the Hotel El Embajador.

When they were filming Miami Vice in Santo Domingo I was at the outdoor cafe at the Hotel Conde de Penalba with a friend from Cambridge, Massachusetts. We struck up a conversation with an American at the next table who was wearing a Miami Vice T-Shirt.

He grew up in the same neighborhood as my friend and they had lots in common. He worked for a company that located old cars for film productions and he had come to Santo Domingo well in advance of filming to do just that. There were local contacts who were known to his company who expedited the process.

There are plenty of old cars in Santo Domingo. Occasionally you see them on the road. There are several in my neighborhood that are well maintained and only driven a few times a year.

DR served as nicaragua in sorcerer. then as vietnam with some scenes from apocalypse now shot at rio de chavon.
and, of course, as cuba again in dreaming of julia and the good shepherd.

and for the movie havana with robert redford.

We used to have one, a Chevy Bel Air 1957, which we hired out for use in films including The Feast of the Goat and Miami Vice. It played a lead role in the Goat, and was a mere extra in Miami Vice.

There is a company in the Zona Oriental, Angel Todo Carro, which specialises in this. Angel owns or owned a magnificent Oldsmobile in perfect running order.

One of the other Santo Domingo/Havana scenes for the Godfather was filmed on Calle Hostos in the Colonial Zone, on the steep slope with the wooden houses and stone wall that goes from Las ruinas de San Francisco to Calle Las Mercedes.

A revival of 1980s English sitcom Auf Wiedersehen Pet set in Havana was filmed in the Santa Barbara sector of the Colonial Zone about ten years ago - I first heard about it when I bumped into the crew on Playa Rinc?n.

In the Good Shepherd the scene filmed on Plaza Duarte was supposed to be some unnamed Central African country, IIRC.

Good to hear of all this, sounds like the film industry has a bit of a reputation in the DR.

Based on "Picks" fotos of the upcoming new construction of a studio "Doliowood" this could be a new economic driver. I lived in Vancouver Canada when it started of slowly, then quickly grew into "Hollywood North" this brought a ton of money and awareness to Vancouver which made it one of the most high priced and stable real estate markets in North America- not to mention it always rates in the top 4 "best cities in the world" to live... Lets hope the DR can become similar as the Caribe's favorite selection for filming. Pichardo when is this studio due to complete and who owns it?
