Saw this on the facebook wall of a friend.
The information underneath said
"...
es un gringo y lo sacaron a poner el PIN. Se nota que se gringo, supongo que no confiaba en nadie."

Obviously he did not know anyone. And the clinics are cynics....and they don't want to get stiffed.

Lucky the guy and the money in his account.

Not far from the truth!
I was in the "ICU" here in SD.
We needed money, so I had to give my lovely "Dominican Bride" my card, and my "PIN".
She took out 10,000 for the us, and then 10,000 for her.
When I got my statement she claimed she only took out 10,000.
I later told her that I went to the bank, they showed me the "Video" of her taking out 10,000 TWICE!
I told her the bank wanted to have her arrested. She "confessed".
I'm surprised she didn't claim the 2nd. transaction was a re-play!
Most Dominicans would have used that excuse.
I changed ALL my "CCs", after that!
I actually have to sleep with my wallet under my pillow every night, and take it with me when I take a shower.
Gotta Luv 'Em!
I had a "Gringo" friend that had so many pesos taken from his wallet, by his "Lovely Dominicana", everytime when he went to take a shower, that he started smelling like a "Frenchman"!
I told him about taking his wallet with him to the bathroom, he smells much better now!

So funny as usual, CC!. A technique I use is I have two accounts in my bank, but only one of them can be accessed via ATM. That account is always empty, when I need to withdraw from an ATM, I go online and transfer from the other account the amount I want to withdraw. I had to do this after several frauds to my account using ATMs, but I found it works very well for other uses, if you know what I mean...

Any free medical care in the D-R, any ??

I mean what about the Emergency room like after a car or moto accident, will they first stick their hands in your pockets before taking care of you ?

No free medical care at-all in the D-R ??

Medical care is free in any public hospital in DR. Emergency or not. That is, many times you have to buy the medical supplies needed, because they are usually out, but in terms of payment, none...

Thanks for your reply.

For a while there I thought I was living in a complete Soddom and Gommorah.

What about paying the ambulance, at what point does that kick in after a car accident ?

jeje, conchos are usually makeshift ambulances...I don't know of any hospital with a working ambulance, and (if there is one) I have no idea how to contact them. There are private ambulance services, of course, and those work very well..

When I was shot there were no local ambulances. Taken to nearest hospital on motoconcho and then by car. It took 3 hours to find an ambulance in order to be transferred to the capital, and they would only go if we paid to fill up with diesel and paid 30,000RD$. On arrival at hospital, they insisted on proof of insurance plus a RD$30k I think it was deposit before they would admit me to the ER. There was a cash point nearby luckily.

If you are going to have an accident or be shot, make sure you have access to cash!

After the last 2 posts the only access I'd need is access to the nearest Airport.:paranoid:

Your post sort-of contradicts post #8, of free medical care in the D-R.

In Bournigal Clinic in Puerto Plata, you will not be allowed to "check out" of your room until you have squared up with your bill. I imagine this is the same as any other private clinic in the DR. So the OP's picture could have been part of either the admission or check out procedure of any given private clinic.

I don't think that any of us ever want to be treated in a public hospital in the DR.

They charged me 300 pesos for physio in Jarabacoa so my wife cried that they shouldn't charge me any
more than a Dominican so they lowered it to 200 pesos ($6 dollars) Physiotherapist is a lovely Haitian lady trained at Hillbilly University in Santiago and Fluent in English. I thought the GRINGO price was good.

There is free medical care but the problem is that the public hospitals are not really that good at emergency care. They turned me away as did not want a dead gringa on their hands. The treatment is free but the medicines are not.

You won't have any say in it if you are taken unconcious.

It isn't so bad. I mean, besides being a little more crowded, but basic stabilization procedures will be the same anywhere you go. Once you're stabilized, you will be transfered to a clinic if you have insurance. Besides, in case of traffic accidents, there are hospitals specialized to treat those emergencies (at least 2 of them in SD), at a clinic you will have to wait for the resident specialist to show up
