Is it my computer or is it dr1? I have to continually log in. Every time I leave the computer, say to make a cup of tea, or even look at another web page for half an hour when I come back to dr1 I have to log in again and no at these times I don't switch the computer off.

You may also want to check if your internet connection is multiplexed at all. For example, if there are multiple modems/routers that automatically balance the load from one to the other. While a clever way to get better throughput it also changes your assigned IP address and that will disconnect a login.
