my wife's car says it should be 24 MPG in the city and it only got 18 mpg on this last tank full, (320 miles from 17 gallons) .. has anyone else noticed their cars don't run as efficiently as the mpg from gas quality or such or could their be an issue that I need to go to a specialist to get checked.. from my calculation she is missing at least 100 miles from a full tank.. thanks guys.

This phenomenon is not uncommon. Some car owners have even sued manufacturers for the discrepancy between the advertised MPG and the true MPG. Honda and Hyundai, both.

Besides that the gas sold in DR is of inferior quality. For example the regular gas in Holland has octane level 95 and the good gas has octane level 98. In DR the good gas is 92 I think and the regular is about 87. This affects the mileage while there is a recommended octane level for a car to run efficient

THe gas mileage statement clearly declares that you may not get that mileage.

The MPG is obtained by a professional driver... if you accelerate and brake too quickly, you will adversely affect that MPG.

As stated, gas quality is another contributing factor.

In short, you are SOL..... it is what it is...... hills, etc

You can bet that the stated number is the optimum number and rarely achievable in the real world - let alone the 3rd world

It all depends on how heavy your right foot is. If you are consistently flooring to get to that optimal speed you probably get no way near the said mileage. Then again all the mileage are probably measured in the lab somewhere to get optimal miles on the leveled ground to advertise how efficient their cars are. I doubt people will get more miles then the advertised anymore. I used to get more then advertised on my MB E320 I did a round trip from New Jersey to Boston with one tank. It turned out I did 31 MPG on 600 miles of lot of highway plus some city driving. And last year before I came to DR I rented a brand new Corolla with about 7000 miles and I drove all the way to Florida and back and got some what disappointed 31-32 MPG.

This is so true. My car is supposed to give 27-32 mpg. I have seen other owners (abroad) post in car forums that they get about that all the time. I drive like gramma most of the time and still can only get 12-13 mpg. Car in perfect condition, BTW. I have to assume gas is of terrible quality and not even near the octanes they say...

You guys are all correct, although in Belgium (and I think Europe) a car manufacturer has to give real figures, and not figures obtained from driving around a track in perfect conditions.

What you guys seem to forget, are the horrible road, and driving conditions here. Sayanora inquired about city mileage. With the bad roads here, the motoconchos cutting you off all the time, the crazy drivers, etc... you do a lot more braking and accelerating here then you would do in the US or Europe... hence less mileage per gallon.

Sure fuel quality, and how you drive have a huge influence as well.
