RD$579,999.95 is $14,683.54 US!

That TV from Amazon is available for under $9,000 US. Still really high, but come on that is over a $5,000 US difference in price:

With 4K resolution TV sets coming out in the not-too-distant future, this 90-inch set may be overpriced.

With all new things, prices will go down, when production and other models come up.
I like to see who will break out the master charge to buy that monster, a politico may be???? But they will sell many of them.

Yea, as if politicos had the cash to buy crap like this.. Having been in a few politicos houses myself, they are usually all luxury outside and 1 step away from a campo house inside. These will almost exclusively be sold to narcos and empresarios.

Remember that total import tax, luxury tax and ITBIS on flat screen TV's is 56%.

So US$8.830 + 56% = US$13.775

Calculate shipping, insurance (if ever a freight forwarder would ship it) and you are adding well over another US$1,000

A total would be more than the PriceSmart price. It really IS a bargain there! And don't forget you even get some "kind" of warranty.

The warranty alone renders importing that TV illogical...Pay the Premium and buy it on PriceSmart if you're interested on that mamoth TV..

Why would anyone get 3D TVs in DR? Does any channels in DR broadcasting anything in 3D? At this point I am even skeptical if Claro is broadcasting anything over 720p.

rubio, no, no, no. let's start from this: pricesmart does not pay for a product what you do. not even the best of the best prices you could find. they buy bulk and have buyers to negotiate best prices. they also pay taxes and customs differently than you.

and even if this TV was sold with little or no profit it is ok. sometimes it is about prestige and recognition. look, we are talking about them and the TV already (and i find pricesmart very crappy). and possibly after a while on display, if not bought, this TV will make a nice gift to someone in government taxes office or customs or police or anyone else pricesmart wants to please.

Do you really believe price smart is paying the same import tax you or I would ?

If someone considers buying that TV in the DR and in the USA, it really does not matter what import taxes PriceSmart pays. What matters if what that "someone" would pay.

That's one way of looking on things. Another one is comparing what is your cost as a consumer here and your cost of buying abroad and bringing it in. You know it is a nature of market economy that every business tries to maximize its utility. The marketing department at PS knows very well how much that set costs in the USA for your and how much it costs for you to bring it in. They set the price at the same level or slightly above it, considering warranty. There is nothing illogical on how they calculate the final price. Illogical (from the pure economic standpoint on maximizing one's own utility) would be to sell it for LESS. Plus there is a demand and offer curve. If there is no demand for the product at this price, and they have the stock of sets, the price will go down at some point.

(Giving sets away to politicians, police, taxman, etc. may be the reduction in price as well or maybe not, depending on how much "goodwill" is generated by such giving away and such goodwill's value in monetary terms for the business of PriceSmart. If the goodwill generated is less than the value of the set, the price reduction has happened. If it is same or more as the price of set, it was a good economic decision. We are not talking whether it's legal to give sets to those people, we are talking about purely economic transaction - give set away and generate goodwill *)

* selling drugs, for example, is illegal but it is economic transaction nevertheless.
