Hi,

I had an appointment with a maxilofacial surgeon.

For removal of a somewhat larger cyst and extraction of three molars under LA I was quoted 2K dollars.

He will come from SDQ to Bavaro to do it.

Is this price OK or does it appear too steep?

Anybody has some numbers to compare?

Thanks!

Seems pricey to me - I paid 500 pesos for extraction under local. 10,000 pesos for a crown. Those are barrio prices though.

There needs to be something done a normal dentist could not accomplish. There is a slight risk of (micro) fracturing the jaw etc. So it needs to be done by a specialist... :(

Damn, that amount hurts me more than the thought of getting this surgery, lol

Seems high. You may want to search for the thread about Robert's dental surgery (it's a sticky somewhere). I think it has some prices if I remember correctly. If I was you I would probably make the trip down to Santiago to that one clinic as you would already know the quality of service they provide.

Yeah, I know Robert's thread. I am browsing through it but I can't see that he had done anything similar to what needs to be done in my case... So no numbers there to compare.

But, they have a branch here in Punta Cana and I am thinking to give them a call to get maybe a second opinion...

I don't anything about your type of dental surgery, but let's suppose you needed to fly back to USA or Europe to have this done...just your airfare alone could be $500 to $1200, plus whatever the surgery costs. In Scandinavia (i'm more familiar with prices in Norway), the cost of this would be 5 times more, so in my opinion, it sounds like a good deal--especially when you consider he's coming to you to do the surgery!

That sounds a bit high for three extraction and a cyst. I would suggest that trip to santiago to see some other people. Dr. Llin?s and Dra Rita Mu?oz. They tend to try and avoid extractions if at all possible.

You might think about it if you can take a couple of days off to come here and have it studied.

You right. But this can absolutely be done here in the DR. The question is if I am getting overcharged here or not. If I can save a couple hundred I would not say no.

The surgeon himself has a very good reputation and credentials though...

Thank you.

This is part of the problem. I can't take off and do a trip to get it done somewhere else.

It will be done on a Friday so I can recover until Monday.

2 of the 3 molars are destroyed and need to be removed. And the third one caused the cyst. So no way to keep them unfortunately...

So I guess him or the branch of Dental Cibao in PC Village IF they do that kind of surgery...

How can he come to you to perform surgery? Does he have all the necessary equipment in a mobile home? I would go to the Dental Cibao and get an estimate from there.

I like your thinking Mike, but again, suppose you need to drive across this island--it will be $100 just in gas to go from Punta Cana to Santiago and back, then sitting around all afternoon in some doctor's office, eating on the way there and back, stopping for a lap dance, driving in the rain or hot sun, etc. After you factor all these costs in, you're probably saving at least $200 having him come to you.

Listen to me...I'm a glorified travel agent, if this is about only saving $200 dollars, i'm sorry, having him come to you makes immensely more sense then risking the wear and tear on your car, tires, and mental health driving across the island just to save $200 or $300. I don't think people here--who often worry about saving $1dollar on a beer--will understand the immense savings and convenience of having a doctor come to you! You cannot really put a price on this. well, you can, but it won't be enough in my opinion. and think about having to drive 5 hours one-way from santiago back to punta cana under the influence of pain killers and hallucinogens (swollen mouth) just to save $200.

Wake up, brother, smell the roses.

love frank

OK you right, makes sense.

Well, he actually does not come to me as in "to my house" but to my Dentist's location but I know what you mean! :)

If you have insurance, make sure it doesn't cover even a part of it. Even the basic insurance covers basic dental procedures. I know this is nothing basic, but who knows?

No insurance...

...well, actually we are close to sign for insurances but for my case this comes too late.

There is a maxillofacial surgeon in Higuey. I will get you a contact this afternoon. Maybe you can check with him.
