Trying to decide whether to get contacts in the US....or wait and get them in the DR> I am thinking they would be less expensive - or at least the $100 eye consultation would be less in Puerto Plata or Santiago.

Any experiences?

No DR experience with purchasing them but been using them for about 26 years. Get a consultation and then order several years' worth(I'm assuming your eyes are done changing). Dv8 mentioned recently that she keeps her "night/day" contacts in for a month at a time. I push it to 2 or 3. For a few hundred dollars you can get the consultation and a 2 or 3 year supply.

i actually also push it further than a month. and those lenses are the best i've ever had. i tried dailies and standard monthly lenses. what a pain in the eye!
i have such poor eyesight that without lenses i cannot even see my feet. well, not that i can see them at the best of times anyways ;)
in any case, i buy my night and days in poland but i go to the doctor in DR, in santiago: dr bernardo rodriguez, clina union medica, suite 501/502. 809 242 5322. he is spanish. excellent specialist.

Prices here (La Romana) for Acuvue Hydroclear
are double that of 1-800-Contacts in the US. BUT... To order from 1-800-Contacts you need to send them a copy of a valid prescription in order to ship to a US mailbox address.

They will only authorize orders without a valid US prescription if the order is to be shipped to a non US address - which of course doesn't work for us here in the DR using courier services.

I'm in a pickle as my prescription has changed since I was in the US and my incompetent La Romana optician has no record on file of my new script!!! They scribbled it down on a scrap of paper so I don't even have a proper copy. 1-800-Contacts can't even call them to verify as the optician has no record on file DUH :(
Time to use my graphic design forgery skills me thinks....

As a side note... My script is -2.75, my rubbish local optician didn't have them in stock and tried to palm me off with -2.5 instead saying "they're nearly the same" !!!!!!

I am going back to wearing glasses. I have very dry eyes and it hasn't been better since living here so my lenses are in the bin.
I coped without since I could manage without for watching tv and driving a car (which is very occasional here for me) but now that I am still more on the computer I really need one for that particular distance.

For all of those wearing contacts... let me give you a piece of well meant warning...

Yes, there are contacts out there you can wear for a month....

And yes, you can wear them longer.... BUTTT, you take a huge risk. If you get an infection because of wearing them too long, it is possible you will never be able to wear contact lenses again.

I am not in the business anymore, but used to be a troubleshooter for B&L Contacts lenses, and one of the top 10 in Belgium for contacts...

So, my advice, do follow the prescriptions... you might regret it otherwise...

I hear you, doc. My optometrist complains about it too. But he also admits my eyes are very healthy.

So what if one took them out and gave them an overnight soak/cleaning? Would that make a difference?

I just posted in the "quality of eye glasses" thread concerning eye care and cataracts.
