The Puerto Rican team of Segundo Cardona has won the international architectural competition for the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Port-au-Prince.

Highlights:

  • Capture the essence of new liturgical guidelines, especially those related to the Second Vatican Council.
  • Provide worship space for 1,200 persons (overflow capacity: 600).
  • Create an expandable space, able to accommodate larger crowds, monumental yet intimate.
  • Preserve a historical memory of the original building and create a space of remembrance for the 2010 earthquake victims.
  • The overall selection and use of materials was based mainly on local availability and craftsmanship so as to promote new work opportunities in favor of the local economy.

It is for their spiritual well being and don't forget, they hand out "bread" there...

No really, instead of building a church the church could for sure have done more important things over there with that money...

The Catholic Church loves poverty. True story.

I understand this is a convenient point of view but the fact is the Church is always where the poor are and no one other organization in this history of the world, past or present, has done or does more for the poor.

Yes. The Church loves poverty. Loving the poor... is another matter.

Why replace a stately old building with that ugly modern structure?

It suffered major damage; the photo is pre earthquake.

I prefer the older classic look but what do I know. I will say architects are some of the most obstinate people I've had the pleasure of meeting. :)

Well, the U.S. put some soldiers, DR put some building companies, Venezuela created some political disturbance offices, why can't The Vatican get their slice too?

Only one haitian was on the selection team.

The reviews have not veen positive. The facade is nice and capture the old cathedral look....the rest however should be redesigned.

If we let architecs have total freedom, we will end up with a collection of ugly modern structures with no lasting power.
