From today's Sosua News:

[h=5]The Carnival of Puerto Plata started Sunday afternoon with a grand parade along the promenade (Malec?n) of the port city.[/h]

[h=5]The parade was led by King Momo, who was accompanied by Queen Roquelito Garcia and the organizers of the festival. Behind them followed a long parade of the 'los taim?scaros. Dominicans dressed up to the Indian tradition, their faces hidden behind an Indian mask. In front of the fire station, the jury sat on a specially built stage where they reviewed the various groups critically. Also on the coming Sundays there will be parades, performances by folk groups and bands to exuberantly celebrate carnival in Puerto Plata.[/h]

I thought this thread was going to be about the Start of construction of the new 65 million dollar "Carnival Cruise Lines"cruise ship dock in "PP"!
Don't forget how great that will be for the "PP', North Coast" economy.
I think the "Carnaval" will be a big deal for tourists once the port is finished.
Good for Sosua as well, I HOPE!

Thanks Ken.

Carnival exhibit and children's activities

The Carnival celebrations in Puerto Plata are going through a renewal -- trying to integrate family and culture into the crazy festivities. The parades officially start at 2 pm but things do not really get going until after 4 and not in full swing until much later. In the central park the Carnival Committee has set up a children's Carnival with face painting, bouncey houses, plays, etc. The little kids are dressed up in modern and traditional costumes. Across from central park is the Casa de Cultura that is mounting an exhibit of traditional carnival masks which explains the tradition of the carnival masks (the small pamphlet accompanying the exhibit, thanks to Meeting Place Puerto Plata volunteers, was translated in English).
