Re: DSS Service Availability

Both Echo Star and Direct TV systems work in the DR. You could bring your unit down and you will receive the programming you have subscribed to back home. Leave your small dish (it will not work here) and you will need to purchase a 6' fibreglass dish (available here) but bring your LNB. Keep a US address as the companies are not allowed to sell programming outside the USA.

The real deal!

Correct, the dss is here as long as you subscribe it to a USA address and pay the bill from there. Here is how it works: you can get the DSS signal here (in DR) but the signal is too weak; because the satellite is focused on the continentel USA and not supposed to cover the Dom. rep area. however, if you use a bigger dish (6 foot or 9 foot) then you can make up for the lost signal strength. The dish simply amplifies the signal and the thing in the middle LNB is the real antenna.
So have the system turned on there at your florida address and don't bother bringing in the small dish (just the box and the small LNB antenna). Now have the system connected in santiago and pay in USA. But sure to buy the bigger fiberglass dish here to receive the full strong signal.
many dominicans would try to sell you a system (or will offer to sell a programing card for your existing system): but be aware, the programing cards that they sell are pirate cards which cost alot of money and often get shut down by the DSS providers. then you would have to reprogram them and often the seller refuses to recoganize his warranty. Now you would be forced to pay more money everytime the system goes down.
Best bet: pay for the programming in florida at your address and ship the system with the issued programing card to your mom in santiago.
