I just thought I'd share my experience as a customer at shops in Santo Domingo for a few days. As I paid mostly is US dollars, I received change in that currency as well. On three occassions I received one or more 2-dollar bills. I've never heard of that happening in the US.

They are more an "oddity" in the US--people that get them collect them or turn them in at the bank. People that get them in the DR (likely as a tip from a gringo) need to convert them. As another thread said, banks in the DR are picking about taking them, so somebody with one just tries to pass it off to someone else.

I thought selling stuff formally in foreign currency was illegal, let alone giving change...oh well, maybe it is somewhere else and I'm confused.

They are pretty much unknown to people under 40 in the US:

Taco Bell and the $2 Bill

The exception is in areas around casinos, which have some machines that take $2 bills. You also see Susan B's sometimes like that.

Or "Gentlemen's clubs." Recently, Myself and a few friends got together to take the son of of, well we went to a strip club in Tampa. The "receptionist" asks how many dollars we want converted into two dollar bills? Me being out of touch had to ask and the reply was "The girls don't really like having one dollar bills tucked in their outfits" I'm out of touch :-(
