Wondering where one could purchase or download current maps of DR. I have been searching and cant find anything useful. The closest thing I found was a website that offered it for around $50.00 which in my opinion is way too much.

If you have an Android phone with Google Maps you can just download the maps offline and use it without having to use any data.

Suarezn I do have an Android device (phone).
Would I have turn by turn?
and if so would I get hit with roaming charges or other data related charges, My carrier is T-MOBILE.
I already have tthe DR map I guess it came with the app as well as every other country in the world. When I Downloaded it last year.

NALS (or anyone who knows the answer) - Is this the GPS system that I saw for sale at a booth in the SDQ airport (or similar)? I thought about getting one, so I do not need to use phone data plan. It would be nice to have, especially if there are no monthly charges, just the one-time up front purchase.

Could be. I think there's only one company that is distributing the devices within the country.

Thanks. And - it is just the one-time charge? Not a monthly charge for using the GPS signal, correct? (As opposed to using your phone's monthly data plan...)

$100 would be fine, paid once. But if the device has a monthly charge for GPS turn-by-turn navigation service in the DR, then that would probably not be worth getting. And since the data plan on a phone is not unlimited, I do not want to use up all the data on just using a turn-by-turn navigator on the phone. That is why I ask - because I have not bought a Garmin here in the DR.
kbeitz - it sounds like you brought a Garmin with you to the DR and it is working - so maybe that is what i will do, buy one the next time I go back to the US.

Really the only place you would need a GPS would be in Santo Domingo, Santiago or other large metro areas. Get yourself a NatGeo Map of the DR and you will find all the detail you need. When you are out in the countryside there are not that many main roads that GPS would help you on. I believe you can buy a GPS, such as, Garmin in the DR with maps loaded in. Not sure of the price. If you rent a car you may also be able to get this option. When Moses was out in the desert he didn't have a stinkin' GPS and he didn't ask for directions. Yes, he wandered for 40 years. Man up and go old school.
