My mother had been suffering from cataracts from quite a while. Finally this month she gathered the courage to have the surgery. I must say I'm amazed at the results. The surgery itself took about 15 minutes for each eye (left eye last week, right eye yesterday), and the recovery couldn't be faster. Next day she was resuming normal activities and yes, with a sharp new eyesight!. She's 70.

I don't know if I'm allowed to recommend the place here (SD), but I can tell the service was excellent and very professional (to the highest standards). I'm very satisfied. There were a lot of senior gringos who clearly came to the country to have the surgery done. They were all paying in dollars, cash. Maybe US$ 2,000 per eye is cheaper than what they were asked back home. It seems someone is bringing them over, because there were like 8 or 10 of them.

I'm talking about Medical Net, in Rafael Augusto Sanchez street, right before Lincoln Av. corner (casi esquina?), 2nd floor. There is a good group of eye surgeons working there, besides Dr. Carlino Gonzalez who operated my mother. The whole experience made me double check to make sure I was still in DR. I hope this helps anyone needing an eye surgeon and feeling afraid of going to one here.

Thanks for the info. Somebody will find that information useful when they need it. To complete the information framework, it would be good to know, how much did they charge you (the non-gringo-medical-tourist price) ? (per eye)

Fortunately my mother is included in my insurance policy, so I actually paid DOP 17,000 per eye. Insurance covered DOP 63,000 per eye, so the full price would be DOP 80,000 per eye.

I strongly support the recommendation of Dr. Gonzalez. He did the eyes of both my wife and myself. Total outstanding, from initial diagnosis to completion of post-op checking.

The address is Rafael Augusto Sanchez #45, the building has a MEDICALNET sign. His office is on the 2nd floor, Suite 204. Tel809-732-9988. Dr. Gonzalez is part of a group that includes specialists in all aspects of eye care.

May i ask the name of your insurance who paid the procedure, because not all are paying it! Would be great to know for future treatment....

PALIC. I pay around 700 pesos a month for my mother. The insurance is provided by my employer, so I'm not sure if an individual policy has the same coverage. It wouldn't hurt to ask PALIC about it.
There are some conditions, like astigmatism that can be corrected by using glasses, so the insurance refuses to pay for that surgery and consider it as cosmetic. However, since the main reason for the operation was cataracts the surgeon just went ahead and corrected the astigmatism too for a little surcharge of something around DOP 6,000

In south Florida ( Lots of old people ) you can have both eyes done for just under 4 grand if you don't have insurance. Less if you shop around. Most seniors in the U.S will be eligible to use medicare.

You got to love modern medicine. You mother is now good for another 100,000 miles. Congrats to her.
