Hi,
I am looking to rent an apartment in Santo Domingo for a vacation and not sure which area to choose ? what are the differences, etc? I found 3 places ? Gazcue, Colonial Zone, and Cuidad Universitaria. The best price and what seems to be a very nice place is in Cuidad Universitaria ? but I am not familiar with this. I know the Colonial Zone and that is close to everything, but can anyone give me advice on the other two locations? I would appreciate any thoughts.
Thanks!

Gas us is just a place, there is little actually there, lots of ex pats live there so prices are high, but for no other reason than ex pats live there. For me, there are no real benefits. Annie will be along to tell you more I expect.
universitaria is one of the safest places in the capital due to the schools with so much security and the police headquarters, lots of top line officials have places there, loads of security.

neither are decent vacation spots, santo Domingo is a day trippers in and out place, vacationing for more than 12 hours is pushing it.

Thank you- very helpful! I am actually going to be in Cabarete and Las Terrenas for a bit to get the beach, etc, but still wanted a few days to explore the capital a bit. We get in Friday evening and leave Monday morning, so not too much time. I have visited once and went to the concert in the ruins on Sunday and loved it- main reason I want to return... I just don't know the areas to well as to where to stay. Appreciate your advice.

If you've just got a couple of nights then just stay local to where you wanna be. Uni is a bit out for you, I'd just stay in CZ, make life easy and you can still pretend you're on vacation, not assignment.

I should have asked this to begin with - but approximately how far is the University area from the Colonial Zone? About how much would a cab ride be? Since it will be just girls in our group- safety is obviously important. I'm fine with paying cab fare to and from if it means we are staying further away but in a safe area. Thanks!

Gazcue is in the middle of zona colonial and zona universitaria. I lived in Gazcue for a few years. DEcent walk but we walked to the sunday Grupo Bonye concert at the ruins more than once, but took taxi back. Taxi should not be more than 200 pesos each way from zona universitaria.

Gazcue is walking distance from colonial zone, has a decent amount of restaurants. Walking distance to casinos. Walking distance to malecon to have a drink with a sea breeze.

If you dug grupo Bonye you may like El Conuco in Gazcue, folkloirc flavored "show", which includes women dancing on top of liquor bottles. Also Hotel Jaragua has a live Merengue group which is pretty decent.

A cab into ZC should be RD150, but going back can be RD250 since you're tourists, unless you walk out a little and grab a cab. The cabs on El Conde take liberties, avoid them if you can.

if it is for three months or less rent in the Zona

more than a year.. rent in Gazcue

Zona Universtaire is a hopping younger scene but great if you are chasing young tail

Thanks. Just a few days. I can not find many apartment rentals in Colonial Zone which is why I found Gazcue. If you have apartment suggestions for a short stay, let me know. We prefer and apartment with at least 2 bedrooms and a kitchen so we can cook on our own, which is why we are not getting a hotel. Thank you!

I think I am going to stay in Gazue or CZ, not the University area. I did find some apartment rentals for 4 day minimum- which is fine. As for cooking - why not :) - I don't need to eat out for every meal!

like a time share apartment?

good luck with that one

you are here for two days and you are going to COOK?
I am in town for up to a week and wanted a unit with an apartment and kitchen. I do prefer to make coffee, cook breakfast, etc rather than dine out for all meals. I have been able to find apartment rentals for a few days - so it seems to work out!

As for taxi, use Aero-Taxi, from my experience its even better than Apollo (farer prices, nice drivers). All the hotels know the number. Check out Terrazas Olympicos near Agora Mall for Bachata-Dancing.
