Food prices

Following the same mode of the exchange rate thread, how about a thread stating the food prices for the most basic staples. If this thread lasts like the other we can all see the change in prices and where the cheapest and most expensive is to be had. Just place the area and the prices.

I'll start.

I was told by a family member in Constanza the following:

At a COLMADO-

PLATANOS 15 pesos each
EGGS 6 pesos each
1 LB of chicken 50 pesos
1 LB of rice 25 pesos

Include the basic staples found at a colmado which are more than the ones I stated, obviously. Hope this thread lasts. I'd love to see the change in prices in same areas and the price differences from area to area. Hope ya'll feel the same :)

It would be interesting to see what prices you are paying at the supermarket. Then we could see the difference between colmado prices and market prices and see the mark-up that occurs at the colmado.

Did you purchase your food in a colmado? If so,you paid 156 pesos for Caf? Santo Domingo and I paid 145 pesos at a supermarket. An increase of 11 pesos. I'm just looking at the difference, that's all.

"Colmados" have a big "Overhead"!
Biggest one, in order to do business, they must give "Credito".
Think about that!
We all know that their customers are lined up waiting for the colmado to open every morning, just to pay what they owe!!!!
I use colmados for "Emergencies" only.
But ain't it great that they are there for those "Emergencies"???
Just call and say, "Estoy Moriendo, Manda me dos JUMBOS, Raaaaapido"!!!!
CCCCCCCCCCCC
I shop the major supermarkets near Arroyo Hondo.
I buy, depending what's "On Special" each day.
Today you can get "Veggies" at 50% off, and 35% off at National", and Sirena/Pola".
Yesterday I hit "JUMBO" for "Veggies".
Tomorrow I can do "OLE" for veggies to last until next Tuesday, then back to "Jumbo,s"!
There are "Special days" for meats, fishes, Veggies, etc.!
It makes a HUGE difference for me, and "MINE"!
First thing each "am", I check "Diario Libre" to see where I am going that morning.Note, shop as early as you can possible go.
NEVER at night, especially Friday's and "Pay Days", and "Kill Yourself" rather than shop this Thursday and Friday!
In FACT, get EVERYTHING you need to survive until next Monday, and lock yourself in your house, then flush the keys down your toilet!!
You will live to see Tuesday that way!

I don't use the "Days-Of-The-Week" any more.
When I wake up I say, is today "Jumbo". or "National"??????????????????????????
I also "Buy In Bulk", which drives my wife "NUTS", and THAT is just a short ride!
If I can get "Fab", at 180 pesos for 4 pounds, NOT 225 to 280 pesos, she thinks it's stupid to waste all that money when you don't need 4 pounds!
No reason to use their limited mental capacity by "Thinking AHEAD"!!!!!
And then why bother, It's not her money!

Fresh beef in campo, 75 peso/lb., same in La Sirena about 89 pesos. Freshly killed chickens in campo [pollo criollo] 50 pesos/lb, fresh chickens at La Sirena 59 pesos/lb. The campo chickens come with their feet up in the air :)

The colmado/campo chickens are very good, I'd much rather buy one there in the morning as opposed to one from my freezer.

Pineapple at beach/campo, 40 pesos, pineapple in SD, 60-70 pesos.

Avocados at campo, 20 pesos.

5 gallon bucket filled with mangos overflowing, in campo, 100 pesos.

Bananas in campo, 3 for 10 pesos.

Eggplants in campo, 15 pesos each.

Big can of freshly picked okra/molondrone in campo - 30-35 pesos

Big bunch of freshly picked red onions, tops on, 50 pesos in campo

Lambi/conch in La Sirena 89 pesos/lb, on beach/campo is 75 pesos.

So some things not much difference, some more...
