Better to go through Jamao and Moca or Gaspar Hernandez to Tenares?
Time estimate for each?

I've never taken the Gaspar Hernandez to Tenares route.

I used to drive the Cabarete - San Francisco route via Gaspar Hernandez and Tenares quite a bit and it was a decent road although with some construction along the way (last time about a year and a half ago). About an hour and a half.

They are almost identical as far as time and condition of the roads. I usually go one way going there and the other way going back. Two hours is a good estimate. I do not drive fast and like to stop.

Did they 'fix' the Tenares road then? I used to have to watch very carefully on the hilly part just outside of GH where there was much shade and many potholes... that was the area to keep your eyes peeled..

It's a rough ride going Gaspar Hernandez / Tenares even if the road is in good conditions.

No idea of the current road condition as I haven't driven theses deep mountain Roads in long, long time.

I like Jamao Rd better!

There are a couple of spots on the Tenares to Gaspar Hernandez road but not a big deal. The views make up for it.

Any real tourist sites do not exist in SFM except for the Sendero de Cacao halfway towards Tenares and the hike up La Loma Quita Espuela. There are a few nice places to eat and there are a couple of stadiums for basketball and baseball when they are in season. The night life is pretty typical with the Casino at the nice hotel in town, a couple higher end clubs and everything in between. Things start pretty late so I tend not to participate in late night activities in town unless I have access to a car.
The central park is nice. I tend to spend most of my time when I am there learning as much as I can about cacao and chocolate, so it is a great place for me.

Going to Tenares is going up to Cacao country (actually there's a fair bit in GH as well)... I love both the fruits and the big chunks of raw chocolate that you can get from there..

The chucks or balls of chocolate that are made in the campo are not raw chocolate. They roast it.

San Francisco de Macoris is about halfway between the Capital and Puerto Plata as the crow flies.
