Last year we had some incredibly awesome, sweet pineapple in Samana. Little did I know the the Most Swwet Alida had future plans for the carcasses.

Seems she warpped the cut off tops in wet towels, transported them home and just stuck them in pots in soil. That's it.

7 months later we have these:

Anybody else ever try this? How did it turn out? Any tips for fertilizer, etc?

They are growing well and seem healthy.

I didn't know one could grow pineapple in pots with just the top.

We'll see how they turn out when ripe...

I do THAT too.
Containers are the only way to go.
I use 5 gallon paint buckets, and some "Homer Buckets" from "Home Depot"!
FULL SUN is also important.
I have to tell the "Bag Boys" at the super market, NOT to break off the tops!
I cut a little of the PINA together with the top.
As your picture shows, they are very pretty as well!
AND FREE!
I just water them well, and add a little "Abono" from the hardware store.
Thanks for reminding me, time to plant MORE!

You can also grow celery in pots too. When you buy celery, cut the celery stalks, but save the bottom part(celery root).Fill a container full of potting soil and stick the celery root in the soil, do not bury it completely.Add water daily and watch the stalks grow!

We've been growing pineapples for years. I save the top and our gardener plants them on the property. Only thing is trying to hide them from the dogs so they have time to grow.
Will try the celery! It's hard to find good celery here like in the U.S.

Over the years I've asked quite a few people how pineapples grow and it seems that no one knows anything more about it than this method, which I am not knocking, but if this were the only way they wouldn't let the tops go when they sell the pi?a.
Looks good, and I will be goiving this a try also.
Der Fish

Commercially they are propagated by suckers, mostly. I used to live close to a pineapple plantation.

These are pineapple suckers. They are growths or seedlings attached to the plant.

"Hijitos" in Puerto Rico and probably also in the DR.

Ask for "Hijuelos" in RD. Cotui and surrounding area is the Pineapple growing capital of The DR. I know a couple of people who have made fortunes with these crops.

Yes, When a banana/plantain tree is about to bear fruit, on the sides of the tree you will see the "hijos" begin to appear (grow).

And don't forget "Cana"!
Just get a sugar cans stalk, chop it into 1 foot pieces, bury it in the ground, water, done!
And then wait.
I know you can buy it already peeled on many street corners, but, it looks nice as a "Back Border", and it's all about teaching the kids to "Garden"!
I do the same with "Bananas", "plantanos, acacados, mangos, etc., etc., etc.

Dominicans almost never plant anything you can eat, other than Bananas.
They just can't wait!
