there is a variety of medicine for that, it depends exactly on what bacteria/amoeba/parasite.

generally doctors in DR prescribe several different medicines. there is aforementioned nitazoxanida, sold as a complete treatment of 6 pills, you take one pill every 12 hours for 3 days. a packet would cost about 400-600 pesos, depending on a brand.
there is also amoebriz (a combination of mebendazole and quinfamida). it is sold in a box of one pills. you take both of them in one go and voila, done. costs about 500 pesos.
other popular medicine is gabbroral 500 mg. also sold in DR under the name paramox (from a local lab). you take one pill a day for 6 days. each pill is about 50 pesos.

DV8...do you recommend taking anything on a regular basis...like once a year, even if you don't have obvious symptoms...that will rid the body of amoebas and other parasites...like ring worms, tape worms, etc.?

(I know you're not a doctor but you seem to have great info about local meds from your Farmacia experience).

i take zentel twice a year. it contains albendazole. many dominicans do it. the packet contains 2 pills, you take them both in the afternoon, after a meal. 2 weeks later take another packet. i am actually not sure of the effectiveness of this therapy. it treats lots of different parasites but i do not think it is used at preventive medicine in USA.

I take zentel as a preventive also; but was told it doesn't get the parasites that Givotan for example does.

Living in Samana in the mid-1980s-early 1990s was very different than now. There were no supermarkets, just colmados and the farmers' market. We bought all of our meat in the farmers' market. Chickens were hanging from strings, surrounded by flies, and the beef was cut off a slab of beet slapped down on a bloody, stained table.

My wife would wash the meat and wipe it down with lime juice before cooking it.

We were advised to take Fel-6 twice a year, that is the med that I believe dv8 was talking about when she mentioned the medication with 6 pills, one taken every 12 hours for 3 days. We did that for a number of years and never had a problem with parasites. Everyone else we knew at that time was doing the same thing.

We didn't experience any side effects taking the medication, even though we were taking it as preventive rather than as a treatment.

Papaya seeds are good for amoebas. Make a smoothie and put in about 1 tsp of seeds. I have done this every day for about 10 days. My amoebas are now gone. And I didn't need to take those nasty antibiotics.

Living in the DR for more than 16years....taking cuba-libres on regular basis, never had amoeba or anything else :)

My advice: don't clean everything to much; the body needs some "****" to come in to "activate" the immune-system!

I would rather be tested to see if I have parasites before I take anything for it, herbal, medicinal, etc..
But that could just be me.

Consulting with a Physician who will no doubt request a stool sample is the only way to correctly diagnose and treat this condition. There are way to many variables involved, one should consult with a Physician.

My symptoms were severe fatigue, weight loss and a bad skin problem (rash that would turn into blisters). The doctor sent me for blood work and I also had to give a stool sample 3 days in a row. All the symptoms were caused by a parasite called entamoeba hystolytica.
I was just about to ask what the symptoms were lol

Anything else to look for?

Papaya seeds are good LK

Not to get too specific but.....

I went to a tropical disease specialist once who informed me that regular type stool samples were not good enough.
He said that a scraping was needed from the intestinal wall..... not all problems will show up in the stool sample but the material that clings to the wall has all the answers.

So he said .....

The guy in front of me was from the Discovery Channel - loading up on meds before heading off in to the wilderness somewhere.

This doctor had a good reputuation

I was actually speaking to the hypochondriacs who just take something every 6 months. I am aware of this type of behaviour even in my own family. :disappoin

That said, I would still like to know the actual problem before taking anything that may not target the source of the problem. And I am sure it is not just me.

I've heard a teaspoon to a Tablespoon in a batida for a week for a cleanse. I think it only works for stomach parasites. Lots of buggies you can get in the tropics.
