From today's Sosua News:

[h=5]The newly appointed Director of Tourism Mr Lorenzo Sancassani got together with the commanders of Tourism Police, Traffic Police and National Police to discuss their strategy. It concerns the following topics:[/h] [h=5]Lorenzo Sancassani[/h]
[h=5]How to improve the service for tourism; What actions are needed to reduce the increased drug-related crimes; What actions are needed to control prostitution in Sos?a.
According to Lorenzo Sancassani, Sos?a has to become more attractive for family tourism. This requires that the crime (mostly committed by young people), nuisance by Illegal motorcycle taxi drivers has to be prevented and to discourage outright prostitution. It is also necessary that the beach is made more attractive and to give the bay the status of a Parque Marino. So a bay where the ecosystem is protected and where diving is ecologically justified.[/h]

Nothing went down in Sosua last night. I think it was a scare from the authorities and it worked. The word was on the street and many girls stayed home. My hunch is that the authorities will still take action but it will be a surprise action. On the upside, many guys in town this week from USA and Canada and supporting our businesses on the strip.

Not to burst anyone's bubble but just because they had a meeting recently regarding positive changes for Sosua one shouldn't expect changes overnight. I think it is apparent what the mayor has done and I commend her and I hope this development will turn into something positive. My own personal preference of course would be to clamp down hard on Sosua on prostitution to the point that it is greatly reduced and that perpetual seekers of prostitutes go to some other place instead of our the DR.

Fixed it for you, Chip.

Will never happen, because it never has happened.

Prostitution is NEVER going away.

While a good case can be made the "in your face" style in the few sex tourist areas, along with criminal activity that seems to follow it, suppress tourism growth, laws banning it are always futile and expensive to enforce.

Perhaps creating Red Light Districts as a separation from traditional "non sex" tourism might help control it, and create a "win-win" for all. These districts could include hotels, fooderies and bars, not just brothels. Perhaps current businesses that cater to sex tourists could be given a "right of first refusals" in land leases in these new districts.

Put the ho's in a red light district, like in Brussels or Amsterdam. That way you know what your getting into. If you build it they will come!

At least they WANT to change the way things are in and around Sosua today. We cant complain on that detail.

BUT!! there is a big BUT.- will they ever do more than just talk.... I believe they will. The problem is they will probably use the military and empty the town for anything "non-dominican.."

I think this was probably a plan for brownie points from somewhere, remember you only need to be seen to be considering an issue here to have acted on it. Everyone put into a position of authority and is asked to consider sosuas future attacks prostitution, it has become rather boring and predictable.
Poor Sosua, they really do keep on doing thier best to break it, I am surprised it still runs as successful as it does. On the positive side of all of this, these clowns couldn't organize a pi$$ up in a brewery or an orgy in a brothel, and so at least for now Sosua will be safe.

So you agree, nice, I think most do know nothing will happen. Really, it's not that important, as well as those in authority constantly threatening change in Sosua, members of DR1 over react and blow those micro issues out of proportion, Sosua isn't that important to most folk.

Nothing is going to change. Here is the thing that so many people here on DR1 don't seem to understand.........the Dominican government doesn't have the muscle to control a nation of 9 million+ people. Want proof? Back in the 1960s the country almost had a full blown revolution, it got so bad the U.S. had to send in the marines. If the Dominican government had true control, they could have handled the situation themselves. They couldn't. The situation today hasn't changed. Controlling a country of 9 million people is no joke, especially for a weak government with limited resources and finances.

Sounds like you don't have a clue regarding the situation in the Dominican Republic in the years after Trujillo was assassinated in 1961.

The present government may not be the most powerful in the world, but there is a true government today, unlike in the early 1960's.

And the US government is not worried about the possibility of the Dominican Republic becoming a socialist, or perhaps communist government today like it was then.

In any case, if you are going to talk about the early 60's, you might want to learn about it. Lots on Google:
