Tricom selects Huawei for LTE network deployment

Tuesday 28 May 2013 | 06:15 CET | News
Dominican Republic operator Tricom has selected Huawei's SingleRAN CDMA/LTE system to migrate from their existing CDMA to LTE network.

The new LTE network will be used to provide voice and ultra-wideband mobile communication services in the Dominican Republic.

Huawei provided Tricom with a SingleRAN CDMA/LTE system with business consulting services to deploy CDMA 1x EV-DO and LTE in the 800MHz and 1900MHz bands.

Tricom's LTE network will cover the capital city of Santo Domingo and other major cities from the start, with further network deployment planned this year to expand coverage.

The deployment will bring mobile broadband services to Tricom's customers.

Tricom Launches SingleRAN CDMA/LTE Network Deployed by Huawei

[Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo May27, 2013]:

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced the LTE network deployed by Huawei for traditional CDMA service provider Tricom has launched commercially in the Dominican Republic. The launch represents a significant milestone for operator network evolution from CDMA to LTE using Huawei's SingleRAN CDMA/LTE solution.

At present, traditional circuit switched services are experiencing limited growth, and CDMA operators are faced with a challenge during the transition period to MBB (mobile broadband). In order to maintain their competitive edge within the Dominican Republic, Tricom choose Huawei's SingleRAN solution to migrate their existing CDMA network to LTE. The new network will be used to provide high-quality voice and ultra-wideband mobile communication services.

Huawei's SingleRAN CDMA/LTE solution is SDR (Software Defined Radio) based to protect original CDMA investments and to achieve rapid LTE network deployment and commercial availability. Huawei provided Tricom with a SingleRAN CDMA/LTE end-to-end solution with business consulting services to deploy CDMA 1x EV-DO and LTE in the 800MHz and 1900MHz bands.

Tricom's LTE network will cover the capital city of Santo Domingo and other major cities from the start, with further network deployment planned in 2013 to expand coverage. The deployment will bring high-speed mobile broadband services to the people of the Dominican Republic, and an internet connection ten times faster than they currently experience

Santiago Peralta, Tricom CTO, said: "Tricom believes it is the right time to leverage LTE developments for our mobile broadband strategy and we're committed to building a quality solution for our users. We chose Huawei's SingleRAN solution, not only because of Huawei's global experience in network deployment, but also for the superior performance of its solutions that will help us to quickly achieve our goals and provide end users with faster and better mobile broadband experiences."

Kevin Wu, Huawei President for CDMA/LTE Wireless Networks, said: "With the coming of LTE, the development path for CDMA operators has become broader. Huawei delivers a convergent and evolved MBB network for global CDMA operators to meet end user demand for excellent data services."

SingleRAN CDMA/LTE is a part of Huawei's SoftMobile suite of solutions that builds upon the successful foundation of the SingleRAN total solution amid industry movement away from voice-and-text, pure-pipe services to an era of data diversity and new vertical market revenue streams. SoftMobile provides ocean-like broadband, orchestration and on-demand network features to leverage the creation of new mobile broadband business models.

If you're fortunate enough to live in one of Tri-Comes limited service areas.

A coworker was offered a new 4G Huawei phone (Android 4.1) with a plan of 1 Gb/mo, he will pay 450 pesos + tax, but he will start paying in January. No charge for the remaining of 2013. I speed tested the service and got 9.2 Gb downloading. Of course, that network is pretty empty at the moment. We'll have to see how it performs with more customers using it. My friend says Tricom is offering that to all current Tricom/Telecable customers. I just renewed with Claro for 18 more months so I can't take the offer.

The Tri Com map shows just a few tiny areas for LTE service.

Which comes first, expanded service or customer demand. Seems like it'd be hard to get LTE customers without decent coverage areas.

Well, at least they are turning over to 4G and a fast one whilst at it.On the upside there's a company still putting fiber optic cable down for miles and miles in the DR. There's still a good chunk to go...
