Will be in Sosua in 2 weeks and would like to know if $700 USD is enough for a week. Also any safety tip, however random it maybe, would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Sage.

Depends...
If you can manage to "only" use 80dollars each day. Yes 80, because you always need to have a tiny extra in your pocket.

So for me 80dollars each day would be more than enough, but i have my own place and my wife make our food.

If you are going to run around with hookers, drink all day et cetc. Then you need 1000- 2000us- no less.

Safety tips is very simple- yet boring. Stay away from drugs and hookers. (and gringos who want to borrow money)

- Do not carry all of your money with you all of the time, leave it in the safe at the hotel with your passport.

- Do not bring or wear expensive and flashy jewelry.

- Do not run around with street hookers (most have "boyfriends" who may happily relieve you of your money).

- Do not walk around in the middle of the night by yourself.

Mostly you will have a blast in Sosua on vacation if you keep your head out of your ass and just enjoy the DR for what it has to offer--it's an amazing country!

$700 isn't much for a week. If you are a lonely traveller then you will be drinking a lot, in the casino and using hookers, getting drunk and ending up with a whore whether capable or not, drunk and whoring seem to come hand in hand (PI).

If you're all inclusive and with the wife then more than enough. If I was going to Sosua without the wife I'd make sure I had at least RD5-6,000 per day and extra for drunken escapades which always seem to cost a lot of money.

vacation always costs more than resident living so take that into consideration.

Best advice, never befriend a Dominican, ignore drugs entirely no matter how drunk, don't even mention words associated with drugs, someone somehow somewhere will have you locked up and extorted.

Never, really?
is that what you intended to say?

In Sosua, the only people who want to be your friend are after something, why put yourself in that position when you only have a week to spend there. One day he's your buddy as he walks you to the beach, the next he wants a drink, day three a meal, four he invites you to his house to meet his family, five gran is in hospital and he is standing at your doorstep at 8am to tell you this, day six he asks you for a little financial help for gran (you decline), seven you are at the clinic recovering from being robbed on your way home on your final night.

Un "refran" that my dad would always utter: Amigo es un peso en el bolsillo (friend is a dollar in your pocket).

Dog says it best

Also do you plan on going on excursions? I would say no that is not enough unless all you want to do is lay on the beach.
DON'T TRUST ANYONE and do not have a lot of money in your wallet. HIDE YOUR $$$$$$

Is it an all inclusive? Then maybe enough.
Can always use credit cards or debit, although there are a lot of scams in certain places.
That would not be enough for me to vacation here.

$700 sounds light to me. When I come down I stay at an all inclusive. So, not including lodging, food and drink, I bring $500. I generally take home about $200. I'd rather have extra than be caught short. Don't forget, just to get to Sosua from the airport (if you are taking a cab) is $30.

That $700 is only for entertainment/food/drinks. Sorry should have specified.

Is there a cheaper way to get from POP to Sosua, bus maybe?

sure, if you only have one luggage bag, just walk outside the airport and flag down a 'taxi publico'. you can throw your bag in the trunk, and share the ride with a few locals, will only cost one dollar to sosua.

ps. sosua is to the left!!

If you don't want to take a taxi, you can take a publico or guagua, but it is a long walk on the access road to get to the highway. You can take a chance wait on the highway side of the booth where drivers pay and hope that a publico comes along to drop off an employee, but hard to say how long you will have to wait.

If you make the long walk to the highway, cross the highway and wait for a publico or guagua. If you have a suitcase, a publico would be better than a guagua because you can put it in the trunk.

Good Afternoon, Try and think of Sosua being like Las Vegas. There are a lot of good people there but you would not meet them when going there for a vacation. Sosua like any tourist town draws every hustler. There are a lot of good Dominicans but you will not meet them.

walking to the highway may subject you to heat exaustion if its between 10am and 5pm. Not worth it in my mind. Not to mention that you may look like an attractive target to thieves. Its quite a ways in 94 degree heat when the humidity is 90 percent. Dumb idea.

I walked about a block away from the exit from the Airport when i dropped off my rental car and kept saying no to taxi's eventually they dropped their price a lot. I had no bags and had been living here 3 weeks though.

If i were you i would just pay the price and go comfy in a taxi especially since it is a HOT walk to the highway after a flight with luggage.
Especially if you are bringing $700 cash with you. TARGET!!!!!!!!!!

Plus anybody leaving the airport on foot, dragging a suitcase is going to look a bloody fool......
And a cheap bloody fool to bat.

He asked a question, I was merely answering.

there is absolutely no way you would be a 'target' walking to the main road in the afternoon. And if it is hot well yes, but if you want to save money it is one way to do so.

I think the taxi to sosua from POP is 25 bucks, so it is preferable to get a cab. It is your choice.

you could take a public car or a guagua, as mentioned, but if i were you i would settle for a taxi. on your way back you can come in a public car, simply ask to drop you off at the airport for an additional 100-200 pesos...
