Has anyone ever been to a cockfight in the DR? What is the opinion of average Dominicans about this sport and are there tourist-friendly arenas?

Yes i have been several times. My wifes family are alittle involved in cockfighting.

I rarely see other much other Gringos there.

I am not sure if i will recommend a visit without some local assistance. Maybe some other can aid you in answering this part.

Depends where you go, most fighting is done on the open street, same as dog fighting, where you probably wouldn't want to find yourself, but if you find a professional arena you should be fine. Watch your wallet.

Giv: and where did you find them ? ;-)
PeterInBrat: got your point of course, these two things are cruel, and not so many people think about what they eat

It used to be, as anyone who watched Roots knows, a major diversion in the US. Now I think it is illegal everywhere in the US except Louisiana and Puerto Rico. Some enterprising neighbor here in Miami had a cockpit in his backyard, which got him busted after there were 50 cars parked outside and all that whooping and hollering.

I forced myself to watch a cockfight for about 2 hours in Santiago DR, in hopes that I would find some amusement in it. For the cockbreeders it obviously is a serious hobby, like dovecotes. Those guys really love their birds. One guy was seriously crying when his rooster went down in a bloody flurry of feathers. For the bettors, it is rather like greyhound racing, just an excuse to bet money. As a betting venue, I'd say that it is better than the damn casinos, where all the games and machines are very much in favor of the house and the house over time always wins big time. In the US, casinos are the only places where lonely smokers can go and find company indoors and out of the weather. I'd outlaw the damned things it I were king. But I'd leave basement poker games alone.

I am no sportsfan. I have not watched a single entire football, baseball or basketball game since high school, 50 years ago. I have tried, but I always fall asleep, or go to the john and find the reading matter more thrilling. So I am not the ideal judge of sporting events. I found it noisy to the point of really irritating and rather boring, though far less so than a teevee football game with inane commentary and 10,000 commercials.

I do not think that a chicken is any more cruelly treated by cockfighters than he is by the Colonel.

and how do you know that i'm not vegetarian ;-) ?

One time I mentioned to some hippy that I had had a small business in the third world. He jumped on me and said, "Gee, it must be tough living off the back of the third world!" My reply was, "How's your coffee?" (Way before we had that fair trade stuff).

One of my favorite jokes is:

Q: How do know if you've invited a vegan to your Dinner Party?
A: Don't worry, they'll let you know..

In my part of the DR it is very common, (the northwest). It seems like there is a fight on almost every day of the week somewhere. Lots of real craziness/emotion. This to me is real entertaining. Costs 50 pesos to stand, more to sit close upfront. I try to sit next to one of my Dominican buddies and get him to place bets for me as my espanol isn't near good enough for that kind of serious activity. I may be wrong but I think this may be the number one sport in the country. No matter how small the town they probably will have a cock fighting arena of some sort. Some more crude than others. A lot of arenas have a little table in back where the losers are processed for the evening meal. I get a lot of expert advice on how to bet and so far am ahead of the game.

Eating a fighting bird is like trying to digest the contents of a pharmacy in grandads old carpet slipper!

The true recipe for coq au vin is made with a fighting rooster who died.. I saw that on an episode of good eats and thought it was kinda funny.. I guess it can only be eaten when braised for hours since it's so damn tough.

I always thought that the original recipe for coq au vin called for a very old hen....ie tough for the long braise.
I guess they go together like a horse and carriage.
The fighting rooster and the old hen, I mean. :classic:

We eat pheasant all the time during hunting season and those birds are wild as hell. Still taste great...with enough cooking. The fighting cocks can't be too much different.

Being wild is a good thing, fantastic diet, being force fed more growth and steroidal tits n tats than Arnold swarzeneger back in his day doesn't do much to flavor the meat.
