Interesting. I was under the impression that a tropical climate is not suitable for growing the proper types of grapes used to make fine wines.

Most of the wine that I make at home is made with honey (mead) rather than grapes .... but Dominican wine sounds interesting. I'll have to try some now.

How soon folks forget! Wine was produced here a few years back, obviously without success. We also had a wine producer in Cabarete, that was nickle/dimed to death until he finally gave up.

I wish these folks a lot of luck with their venture.

Wine production has never stopped in DR:

Yes but he imported his juice and that was a folly with the laws here. I know of nowhere that grapes can be "adapted" to make a fine wine in a tropical country. Good luck is needed indeed.

I have made my own wine here using carambola (star fruit). Turned out pretty good too......starting another batch in a couple of weeks.
As long as no Dominicans are involved in the fermentation stage, the product should turn out pretty good.......if they do, their product will turn out very very sweet (as Dominicans think there is no such thing as too much sugar).......like Gitano or La Fuerza....aka diesel......

Try a cheval blanc, chateau lagarde as bordeaux, meursault, pouilly fuiss? burgundy for a nice meal, but do not try gitano unless you need it as a paint thinner as someone says !! My wife and I where sick for 3 days. Check the sulfite %.

With your wine-making experience (and equipment) .... check out some of the "homemade melomel" videos on youtube. It is "mead" (wine made from honey) so there is no sugar required! When fruit is included in the ferment, it is technically called "melomel", instead of "mead". Try a small batch ... I think you just might like it!

According to the article they are having good results on a small scale, so the grapes shouldn't be a problem.
Remember that as you go up in altitude the temperatures in the DR are not what we are used to think of as a tropical climate.
