After 8 or is it 9 years here I have got into the habit of a small glass of Brugal Extra Viejo Ron as a digestive after my lunch but recently it has seemed to be much harsher, less smooth than it used to be. Of course this could be me and my changing palette but I don't know. Can any of you conniseurs (? spelling) recommend a realy smooth digestive rum without moving into the realms of Napolean, Toussainte or Louis the ?? 250 year old rum?

Suggestions gratefully received.

there was a recent thread here about various really good rums... I forget the title, but a search should find it. It has comments from a number of members who should know what they're talking about... LOL

I drink Brugal EV every night and have noticed no obvious change. On occasion, I drink drink the Brugal XV which is fruitier and sweeter and not much more expensive. Give it a try!!!

I'm no expert in rum, but I always get Zacapa when I see it here. When I'm running out of it and can't find it here, I try to get someone to bring me a bottle. Last time I bought it here the bottle was a little over a 1000 DOP, so it's not that expensive.

Don't switch just yet. Try another bottle first. Quality control is not as perfect here as it is in other countries, so you will get an occasional bad batch. I've had a similar experience.

But for kickers, you might want to buy several different bottles, invite some friends over, and have a tasting party. People do it with wine, so why not for rum?

Try a long island iced tea coctail ( gin 1oz-tequila 1oz-WHITE RHUM 1oz-vodka 1oz-triple sec 1oz in crushed ice, zombie glass, add cola with a lemon edge. After a nice cold beer and a Romeo & Juliette cigar and you know what s next.....

I was introduced to "Brugal Blanco" last year, and it is now my favorite rum for "Rum Drinks".
I will now, after being "teased" by the review, look for a bottle of "1888" to sip on the rocks.
I very seldom drink, ANYMORE", so I look for something "Special" when I do.
