Would like to send a small photo camera the the DR as a present with certified post. Would it be a problem for customs?

Items with a value of under $200 US are supposed to enter duty free. The main problem I see is the unreliability of the DR Postal System. I would use a more reliable service like Vimenpaq, Encargopaq, EPS, etc.

Make sure it is not worth more than 200, customs here will open the package and determine for you even if you lie and declare it is less than 200. Then it will be a hassle and cost a lot to get the package.

Include your purchase receipt in the package. If it shows less than $200, you will be charged ITBIS only (18%), no customs duties.
