I have been browsing these forums for several years now. The Mrs. and I are heading down to the DR for the forth time in about one month. As I was browsing through the forums again, I realized I never registered here so I figured it's about time.

To be honest, when we come down, we stay at the AI's. However, we love to take day trips off of the resort and we try to take some time to see some of the local activities. The tough part about that is that you get swarmed whenever a gringo is spotted.

I would love to move to a Central American, South American or Caribbean location in the next 5-10 years. My wife is a bit more apprehensive about it. At this point, DR is on the short list just behind Panama.

Anyway, thanks for all the years of good advice and stories. I look forward to more.

Welcome aboard Diffie. I hope you find forum as informative and entertaining as I do. In fact, because of this forum it has sparked an interest in Panama and I am going there in November. Personally, I choose my travel destinations based on direct flights. The thread on Dominican vernacular is hysterical.

Your "AI" wrist band gives you away as an "Easy Mark"!
Have it attached so loose that you can slip it off when you go, "Off The Reservation".
They can still spot you, so yell at them is some "Eastern European" fake accent.
They will think you are a cheap Russian bastard that way!

Thanks CC, I think I learned about the wristband trick a few years ago on this very board :)

I was in the DR for an entire month, about ten days in Juan Dolio and 16 in Barahona, and I was never "swarmed". I dressed in long pants as Dominicans do and I speak Spanish fluently, but I am a retired White American and there are few in Juan Dolio and many fewer still in Barahona that look like me. Of course. I was not near any AI resorts, either, other than visiting the disco and Casino in Juan Dolio Nuevo. From time to time, people did ask me for money, but I was never swarmed.
