The hotel Bahoruco Beach Resort in Bahoruco, Barahona, has been acquired by Castillo L?pez y Asociados, a private consortium who promise to invest over 150 million pesos to renovate the hotel which is in complete ruin. This is great news for the southwest, specially when you see that Frank Rainieri and other big investors are also involved in the project.

This is the abandonded Barcelo Bahoruco Beach Resort, this hotel has been abandoned for more than 10 years. It's on the highway from Barahona to Pedernales, in a small fishing village called Bahoruco about 15 kilometers out of Barahona, on the old road bordering the coast, about 5 kilometers after you pass the Pontevedra hotel.

No one who has been to the area can deny the potential and beauty. But the catch 22 is the chicken before the egg, ie who wants to develop without an operable airport (the drive is a big deterrent) and who wants to invest in an airport or initiate flights with no tourism capacity?

Barahona and Paraiso are clearly not touristy places. The people are friendly and seem to me to be more sincere and honest than in other places, but there needs to be a lot of development and clean up. The beach in Barahona could be another Waikiki, but the city beach and both sides of the El Cayo Beach peninsula need major cleaning and better sand and facilities. There is a pulsating nightlife on Barahona's Malecon, especially on weekends.

Paraiso's oceanfront is beautiful, the ocean is fourteen shades of blue, but the beach is large pebbles and slopes too steeply and the water near the beach is far too rough. It also needs better maintenance. Los Patos has several really nice beaches and some adequate hotels, but the place is remote. Transportation is by battered guagua from Barahona south. The scenery is breathtaking, even through a shattered windshield. There are a couple of decent hotels in Paraiso, but the place is dead so far as ambiente goes. There is no ATM between Barahona and Pedernales.

Concerning Paraiso, is it possible to change it into a sandy beach? From photos it does not look like the pebbles are that large, would tourists even wanna go to a beach that would not be sandy? Is the crime rate low?
