and thanks, i know what you want to say: pop a viagra and screw the old leather bag until she squeaks with happiness. good advice. but i am asking about a regular bag. DR is tough on all kinds of goods, that includes leather. the bag in question has been stored in a wardrobe for a while. it has a bit of a musty smell and it's a bit dirty. how to bring it back to life using goodies i can find in DR? make it nice and shiny again?

you have a point. but the leather on the bag is, what do you call it? braided? pleated? nooks and crannies. this is not to be cleaned with shoe polish.

Suggest that you take it to a vehicle restorer who will have the products to restore leather.

If it,s hide leather then simply use shoe polish and an old toothbrush to work into the nooks

Deviate,
If it is mildew then put it out in the sun on a dry day. Turn it over as well. This will kill the mildew -a fungus which will come off like a powder!

Then use a leather restoretive - possibly saddle soap - no wise crakes boys- and it will be like new. Getting rid of the mildew is the thing! Is is orange and red to match your outfits!!!

Anyone know how to get ink spots off a leather handbag?

Some tip in the net:

Difficulty: Moderately EasyInstructions
Things You'll Need:
Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol
Cotton Ball
Leather Conditioner
Soft Cloth

1
DAB SOME ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL ON A COTTON BALL: Purchase some Isopropyl Alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and pour some of the alcohol on a cotton ball.

2
PERFORM A SPOT TEST ON THE LEATHER: Whenever removing a stain from leather or any other delicate fabric or surface, you should always perform a spot test to ensure that you do not discolor or otherwise damage the leather. So apply some alcohol to an inconspicuous location and let it sit for 10 minutes. You should not have any problems; once this spot test is complete, move on to step 3.

3
REMOVE THE INK STAIN FROM THE LEATHER: Using an alcohol soaked cotton ball, rub the ink stain using a circular motion. This makes cleaning ink marks from leather fairly easy; the ink should come off pretty quickly.

4
USE LEATHER CONDITIONER TO CONDITION THE LEATHER: Once the ink stain is removed from the leather couch, leather jacket, leather purse or other leather item, you'll want to use some high quality leather conditioner to restore moisture and shine to the leather

yes, olly, thanks, it is mildew. kinda orangy fungus kinda thingy. it's in few spots. i cleaned it with a damp cloth and the bag will stay outside tomorrow. i cannot clean it with any strong agent like polish because of the plaiting, it would be impossible to get it completely removed and the bag would stain my clothing :( it looks better now, thou.

If you want something to really get that leather soft, the "talabarteros" usually have their own mix of animal fat and god knows what else. Leather just soaks it right up and it really protects it for a long long time. Takes a few days and a bit of rubbing to get the extra off the surface but most definitely worth the work.

Coconut oil and a hairdryer to help it soak in and kill any mold. Vaseline and neetsfoot are not recommended. Beeswax is best if you can find it.

Saddle soap will clean it..... use the brush as described.

Vaseline for the lubricant.... brush applied a gain.... or any good oil.

The leather will soak it up - it won't stain your clothes.

I agree with the shoeshine approach - they'll get into the braiding for you, just supply and old toothbrush

High humidity causes mold/mildew. Store leather in a cool dry place if possible. No dv8, I do not mean
in your fridge.:D More like away from direct sunlight (near windows) or places where there's no
ventilation.
