Listening to the after game press conference, confirm that Argentina on paper was the best team in the tournament.

The surprise was the 19 point victory.

Coach Antigua: "It is just one game. We have not come to win one game."

First quarter the team set the pace that they never let down.

Argentina coach said that DR played its game from the start, the Dominicans dominated all throughout the game.

Jack Michael: We showed character and played a defense game, the team was synchronized.

Dominican Republic learned to play as a team and in this tournament has defeated Puerto Rico and Canada in the FIBA Americas. All the country has to do is defeat Uruguay (the weakest team) and it wins one of the four slots to the next level, the World Basketball Championship in Spain next year.

Dominican Republic won the ticket to play in the FIBA World Championship. Hadn't happened since 1978!

In a very tight and battled game (86-78), the Dominican Republic (ranked 27th) defeated Uruguay (ranked 29th) and finally won its ticket to play in the FIBA World Championship. The country had tried and failed to earn the right to play in the World Championship since 1978. The team that this year lacked the big names this time was able to grab one of four slots available at the Caracas, Venezuela FIBA Americas Championship by defeating top-seeded Argentina (3rd), Canada (26th) and Puerto Rico (19th). Puerto Rico had been undefeated in the tournament until playing the Dominican Republic.
When interviewed after the decisive game against Canada (81-74), team captain Jack Michael Martinez and Coach Orlando Antigua attributed the win to the team being synchronized and playing as a team.
The core players for the Dominican Republic were James Feldeine, Francisco Garc?a, Eloy Vargas, Eulis Baez and team captain Jack Michael Martinez. The Dominican Republic won the right to play in the championships after defeating Uruguay in its third game in the second round.
Orlando Antigua said that while after a first win against Argentina, the team has suffered important losses but was able to pull itself together for a victorious second half. He said the focus was on teamwork, moving the ball, ensuring that the distribution of the shots was good, defending together and trying to have a low number of lost balls.
Martinez said that the team had not had enough time to play together, having only played the Tuto Marchand Cup in Puerto Rico. “We didn’t have the team play together,” he explained. He admitted the team let down its guard after the important win against Argentina in the first round. “Watching the tournament we saw that we had the players to do it and proved this in the second round,” he said in a press conference after the decisive win against Canada. Previously, the Dominican Republic had only been able to win one game against Canada in its previous eight confrontations.
Martinez credited University of Kentucky head coach John Calipari for having changed the team from an individual style of the team to one of team play. Calipari coached the team as it competed internationally on two separate occasions. Martinez has said with U of K assistant coach Orlando Antigua now in charge, a disciple of Calipari, they have continued with this strategy.
The next game in the championship playoffs will be on Tuesday, 10 September.

Coach Cal of University of Kentucky congatulates Dominicans on win at FIBA Americas

The popular webpage for Coach John Calipari of the winning University of Kentucky team posted today congratulations for the Dominican men's basketball team:

"John Calipari set the foundation for Dominican Republic success. Now Orlando Antigua is running with it.

The Dominican Republic National Team, which Antigua took over after Calipari stepped down from his two-year reign, qualified for the 2014 FIFA World Championships in Spain with an 86-78 victory over Uruguay on Sunday at the 2013 FIBA America Championship in Caracas, Venezuela. Led by Jack Michael Martinez?s 17 points, the Dominicans are headed to the World Championships for the first time since 1978.

?Couldn?t be more proud of Orlando, Rod (Strickland), Eduardo Najri, Jose Miguel, and all the players,? Calipari said in a post on his Facebook page. ?What a team effort.?

The Dominicans got off to a slow start in Venezuela, but they rallied to achieve history by going 4-0 in the second stage of the tournament. Next year?s appearance in the FIBA World Championships will mark on the second time the Caribbean nation has made the tournament.

The Dominican Republic?s recent success started with Calipari when he took the team over in 2011. Under Coach Cal, the team narrowly missed qualifying for the country?s first-ever Olympics berth on two different tournaments. Calipari turned over the reins to Antigua in June.

Sunday?s history victory does not mean the 2013 FIBA Americans Championship is over for the Dominican Republic. The semifinals begin Tuesday."
