We went to the liquor store on Labor Day to buy a case of Presidente Light [$6.50 a 6-pack] for a BBQ and saw a few bottles of Brugal Anejo 750ml.

We've talked here before about how Presidente costs about the same in DR & US - I'm wondering if the rum is the same......

Anyone know the cost for this bottle there? We paid $20 here. Just curious.

Alter ,
Thats 840 Rd$ per 750 Ml Bottle (42 RD$ per US$) . Here is is about 300 RD$ per bottle. Eddy will probably give you the accurate figure as he sells a lot of it !

i actually never checked the price but the new XV is a little under 500 pesos. and that is higher than extra viejo and, of course, anejo. so olly is correct, it must be about 300-350 tops.

Thanks for the answers - Mr. AE thought it was high, but we wondered because the Presidente is so cheap in the US.

Are there higher taxes on beer than on rum in DR?

In the US, try the Brugal 1888. Best hard liquor I've ever had. In a word, complex.

Pouring a sparkling dark amber, the aroma is instantly familiar to fans of sherried whiskeys: there are rich scents of raisins, dried apricots, and of course, sherry. There's also a hint of toasty vanilla from the American oak and some familiar rum notes of cinnamon, caramel, and chocolate. Smooth and creamy on the palate, though not overly viscous or syrupy, the sweetness deepens with more caramel, spices (clove, licorice, allspice), sherry, and a distinct light smokiness. The finish lingers and dries out, the sweetness evaporating in a cloud of dry smoke and spices.

AE, the tax depends on the volume of alcohol. so tax for beer is lower than tax for rum. where is the presidente sold in USA made? they belong to a huge company so it is possible it is bottled and produced elsewhere than DR. and all brugal is made here, in DR.

Funny, I just went thru this exercise in the taxi y'day in NYC..... bought a 16oz Coors light for $2.25....
At 42 drp to the $ thats like 95 pesos.

The big Presidente's are 80 pesos.... more bang for the buck in RD,

Yup AE, the rum is +/- 350 pesos

This was a huge liquor store here, and we were surprised to find ANY Dominican rum at all. There were shelves of Bacardi. On the FLOOR were a few boxes, and in one of them were about 6 bottles of the Brugal Anejo.

The funny thing was that when I asked someone who worked there for a case of cold Presidente, he turned out to be a Dominican who owns several gyms and a supermarket in DR.

Presidente is actually a Dutch recipe. President good but has a light flavour and is brewed in the Pilsener style.

In my school days I would drink Whitbread London Stout But that as a long time ago.

PBR and other cheap beer in NY works out to just under $20 for 30 12oz beers with tax and deposit. For bottles in six packs, it's a buck for cheap beer and up.
