In early 2009 opened a new modern hospital 'Cabarete Centro Medico' (CMC), located on the main road between Sos?a and Cabarete, its doors to the general public. This was a development which Sos?a was waiting for! The owners of the new CMC are of Argentine origin and the hospital is a real family affair. The project is the brainchild of Dr. Robert Spitale, a renowned neurosurgeon who has about 30 years of experience.

His parents, Robert and Alida Spitale, form the head of the administration team. Their brother and sister also help out by means of long distance consults from their medical practice in the United States. The CMC also has a number of highly qualified specialists under contract, who they can invoke when needed. The hospital has all the latest equipment needed for these specializations and also has an extensive laboratory. Moreover, it has the most modern equipment in radiology of the north coast (including a CT scan).
This is a private clinic, but patients who are insured with, among others, Monumental, Amor y Paz, ARS or SDS Forturo get reimbursed their medical care. That the CMC hospital meets the demand of tourists and residents is obvious, because an additional floor is constructed. This floor will give room to patients who have to recuperate from major surgery.

Over the past 3 years my wife and I have been to the CMC for a broke ankle and a separated shoulder. The first visit was with trepidation as it was our first time in Sosua and we were not used to the area or the Dominican culture. Our experience could not have been better. We were seen and assessed immediately and the on duty orthopedic surgeon, Dr Reyes, was very comforting and professional. He reset my shoulder and on my return to Canada my physiotherapist was very impressed with his work. When my wife broke her ankle we were in and out of the hospital in 1 and a half hours. Great people and excellent care... In Canada the wait time for the same injury to my wife in our local emergency room would have been 4-8 hours.

I've had better service and care in this private clinic than big hospitals in Canada.

A new business opportunity for Sosua Carbarete? This is the type of investment that the country need to move forward economically. Do you think the gov't will take notice.

Only if someone can get a Jeepeta out of it.

CMC has served us well for a host of minor issues and saved the trouble of driving much further.

Can't say enough about the fantastic care that CMC has provided for me. Both in minor emergency situations and major surgery they have exceeded any expectations I my have had. Having a facility of this caliber in the community is an enormous benefit to those of us that are full time residents and to visitors alike.

We are regulars at CMC including, OBGYN, pediatrician, treatments for Blood pressure a couple of minor accidents and we had our beautiful daughter delivered there 20 months ago. They are a credit to the profession and a valuable asset to our North Coast community with personable and prompt service . I cannot express my appreciation enough for their presence and wish they would open a similar clinic here in Gaspar Hernandez ! We had one incident where the pediatrician left her home at 9 PM on a Sunday night to come to the hospital specifically to treat our daughter. I can only wish they flourish and never leave us !

Since they opened, CMC has been the best thing that has happened in Sosua. At times I think that I live there with all the trips that I have made. Not just for my wife and self, but for our employees, some guests and others in our neighborhood. Brain surgery, broken bones, Epilepsy and cancer diagnosis to .... you have a cold.

Wonderful people, very fair prices and if they think THEY need help they go get it... or recommend you to someone else and will help set up the appointment.

Thanks for the info. Out of ignorance I wouldn't have thought to use them but now might. For those who have used the emergency services how's the pricing for the uninsured gringo? Excessive gringo pricing and i will be taking a cab to Homs in Santiago..

We have never used Homs so I can not answer that. However? In an "emergency", that's always the case, less then 5 minutes to CMC from just about anywhere in the Sosua area is a deal. I've never balked at what they have charged and happy to pay it.

Sorry that I can not answer your question with exact or any figures. :)

Is CMC also the right adress in case of the hard type of dengue ?

I think so. At least they can get some fluids in you and some pain and muscle relaxers. IF you think you have dengue then they can start the process and take blood to confirm.

NO hesitation on this one. OK? If they need more then they will figure it out but first of all, it is YOUR responsibility to go.

HOMS takes insurance. Apparently the particular doctor you contacted doesn't. Many of the doctors do, but not all. That is a decision made by the doctor, not HOMS.

Scratch what I said in previous post. I missed "local" in the post I was responding to. I know that HOMS takes many international insurances, I don't know if they take local.

But I'm sure any doctor or health institution that can manage without taking local insurance is going to do so.
