I'm planning on living in Boca Chica in February and March, 2014. One apartment I am looking at has no wi-fi.

I need:

* Internet access at home (not necessarily mobile)

* At least 2-3 Mbits per second

* No GB limit

* Not a huge start-up cost

I see these typical prices:

Claro Tricom Wind
2 Mbit/s $ 1,295 DOP (35 USD) $ 1,295 DOP (35 USD) $ 1,290 DOP (34.86 USD)

So the main questions are:

1) Which is the best provider?

2) Are these unlimited data plans?

3) How much is the start-up/installation cost?

TIA for any help.

From what I remember Claro will have you sign a contract for 18 months. You might wanna try the cable company because the don?t make you sign a contract and you can cancel it after a month.
I paid with them for 2mb RD2700 per month. Not cheap but at least no contract.

You can get a Claro stick for two months, 5 GB [which you won't use unless you're downloading movies or watching YouTube all the time] for about 3000 pesos.

No contract.

I believe these "sticks" etc are often referred to as USB.

Where does the USB connection come in?

Does the stick broadcast Wi-fi within the house?

The 'stick' plugs into any USB port in your computer. I don't know how to create wi-fi with it, but I know it can be done. I think Matilda [a poster here] did/does that.

Claro USB stick works well, but not to western standards !!!!
Saturday and sunday always bad speed and connection problems, due to people using and buying day credits (RDS 30 a day) and crowding the network.
2 or 3 Mb forget it with claro USB.
If you can find an alternative that's better........

Let us know !!!!

OH, cool. It didn't occur to me that a serial (USB) cable could carry the data rate.

That approach would be fine. I would just have my laptop connected.

Thank you.
