Just got word of cancer diagnosis in the family. Going to US is not an option. Need advice...where is the best, most affordable facility in the DR? Papa is from the North Coast, so Santiago is closest but... would not rule out SD. No insurance. Solely out of pocket. Is this even possible? Really upside down today...

oncoserve, next door to clinica union in santiago.
Oncoserv - Centro Oncol?gico del Norte, Bienvenidos
this is providing you have money to spend. otherwise a public hospital is the only option. a friend of the family has recently finished his treatment for throat cancer and the total came to about half a million pesos (his insurance paid up most).

Hospital Oncologico in Santo Domingo is very good Hospital and more if you dont have Health Insurance, the mother of my cousin was treat there 7 years ago and she is cancer survivor, but one thing you need to know, that is important to have a very healthy diet to have sucess with cancer treament. For Santiago must be some hospital similar to Oncologico in Santo Domingo. I will ask a friend of mine that is a doctor.

Oncoserv is private center, so if you dont have money you dont get service there.

Sorry.

Is the patient a Dominican that would qualify for the National Insurance?

If so (or not) then start asking questions at any Gov. Hospital. The one in POP, Ricardo Limarno, is on the South side of the main road where Gregorio de Lora/Avenida Jose' Eugenio Kounhardt intersect.

Good luck.

Even if they accept local insurance, there could be a big bill. The father of Dominican I know had open heart surgery very recently. Insurance paid a lot, but family still must pay about US$11,000

oncoserve also accepts senasa, click on the link to see what other insurances they take. however, seeing the man is 75 the insurance may not be so enthusiastic to authorize a variety of treatments. i suggest a consult with a corresponding specialist to discuss what options are there and whether there are any alternatives. say, the doctor says chemo would be the best but insurance does not cover it, could it be possible to do a longer radiotherapy instead since that's what insurance covers, and so on.

I have been fighting stage 3c melanoma for the past year and have been using HOMS Cancer Center in Santiago. I've had 2 surgeries, 5 months of chemo and 5 sessions of radiation at HOMS. Great facility with state of the art equipment. Staff is very knowledgable and professional. I am one of the lucky ones and will be a survivor as well. Prices are very reasonable compared to the states. I am not sure what you are able to pay but if you would like more information please pm me....tom
