So I spent nearly a month in DR and loved it, but...

I liked the DR, I really did. We stayed in Bavaro and drove around a bit, but definitely the Bavaro beaches were the best I've ever seen. However, there is one small problem: no boardwalk. One of my greatest joys in Miami, Atlantic City, or L.A. is being able to walk along the beach--I lost 15 pounds one summer just by jogging 30 min. on a boardwalk in the morning in Miami. But there's no place to walk along the beach in Bavaro, which is one of a couple reasons why I don't think I'll move there (we were considering it).

Is there a boardwalk along any beach in DR?

M & J,

Come on....You have a former boxer of 10 Years here, hit the sand!! I always did my road work in the Mornings at about 5AM, would jog along in the sand, then hit the shore and do open wind sprints, running as fast as possible for as long as possible..The sand is the best part, excellent resistance to either lose weight, enhance endurance, cardiovascular, 100 X the benefits of a boardwalk and bring the dog.. :) The DR is a wait & see thingy, sooner or later I'm sure they will get it, build a boardwalk then add all those bodega's on, etc..

I agree wholeheartedly about the sand as a means of resistance and best overall results. What type, or I should state,"what level did you achieve in boxing?"

Wood in the tropics doesn't last and lumber is expensive in the DR. Pressure treated wood would have to be imported.

Actually greenheart wood is used throughout the Caribbean and used in water because it doesn't rot easily. Coney Island boardwalk uses this type.

No place to walk along the beach? What is wrong with walking/running on the sand? I agree with the others on sand being better than a boardwalk.

Hey D,

When I started I was 147 LBS, welterweight, still my favorite class of weight today as a fan..I boxed out of Deer Park Boxing Club, same as Buddy Mcgirt, he was from Brentwood at that time. I was very lucky, this gym/club had major ties with Gleason Gym and a few others, was very competitive, so we always would take a ride to another gym/club and would spar with their members etc...I use to spar with Buddy very often since he was a Jr Welterweight, hand speed was quicker than mine, so that was always best to prepare you for your fight..Anyways, most of our fights were in the Golden Gloves & Empire State Games, sometimes in the Bronx, Tristate area in general. I was very good, 150 - 2 - 140, very heavy right hand...Most of my trainers said I hit harder than Mark Breland and that guy was dropping almost anyone he hit..

So, I was getting ready for the Semi-Finals of the Golden gloves, made it that far, but my opponent was another member from my club..LOL,..That was very awkward!! I liked the guy a lot and we knew each other's style very well, would have been a great fight!! Well, as my luck has it even today, I had to do my road work, usually a 5 mile run, but it was snowing.. i knew better!! but went anyways, should have gone to the beach!!. During my last wind sprint, I hit some black ice on the sidewalk, tore my right knee..It was so bad, I had to walk home backwards, nobody would give me a ride!!! I lived in Wantagh at that time, very nice neighborhood, you would think a ride would not be an issue, it was..

Went to an orthopedic after 3 days since my knee was so swollen, Doc told me its pretty bad, would need to remove the total cartilage and I will have clicking that will eventually lead to arthitis..Great Doc, can I still box??!! He was not a Sports Doctor, but with my insurance, had no choice but to see him or another, no sports specialist..Got my surgery, was awake to see it all on camera and my knee was never the same....Today I still cannot put the needed weight to pivot a right hand. All power comes from your legs and rotation of your body weight..

Overall, I had 3 surgeries, never reconstructive which I bet should have been done and I would have been fine...IF IF IF..could of, should of, would of..I miss it like like crazy D, loved it that much..And if you don't know who Buddy Mcgirt is, he went on a few Years later, became the Jr Welterweight champion and I am 100% sure he would have beaten Witaker for another title, he did have a torn rotator cup which gave him trouble throwing his best punch, left hook!..He now trains quite a few fighters, has a Gym out in LA and another that just opened in NJ, think Nutley, back in April,..As I heard it, my gym closed down not much time after my dilemma, our trainer Joe ragusa died in the ring of a heart attack training..What a great guy he was!! He basically was financing the gym for all of us or he got help from donations and any gym dues from us members, buy it was all Joe, RIP..

He had a son named Mike, was very good too, but no idea whatever happen to him after his dad past..At that time, he really could have gone pro! I was gonna wait one more Year since I was an open fighter, wanted more experience with the better fighters..Ha, what a joke..my life is a funny one..I'm good at many things, Mr Jack of all trades, but I still have no idea what God has planned for me..I even went to Farmmindale University for small animal care, figured to do my next love of life, be a Veterinarian, planned to hit Cornell after...Burp!! Had to stop because the hours with work was an overkill, could not do it..

Sorry to blabba on....But hey! we have a hell of a fight tomorrow tonight!!! That should be a great one!! I'm hoping something close to a Hagler & Leonard fight back in the day..Take Alvarez, if I had money right now I would go online and lay it all down on him..

Have a great day!!

Several of the boardwalks along the Jersey shore have imported Brazilian Garapa or Ipe wood, even though there have been protests from environmentalists.

Well we are about the same age and boxing happens to be one of my favorite sports. I remember all those guys you listed. I could add Howard Davis and Ralph Mann : I am sure you're familiar with them. As a matter of fact, I just ran into Ralph Mann Saturday past in a barbershop in Brentwood. He has a gym in Deer Park as a trainer and at age fifty one, he looks very fit and is in fighting condition. He told me that he gets into the ring with some of his young fighters who are less than half his age.

Your record was impressive! Scrutinizing...150 wins, 2 losses and 140 knockouts. You had a knockout percentage of 93%. I'm sure I must of heard of you if you were laying people out as your record indicates.

Being an ex-boxer, I am sure you're going with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez based on betting spreads right? I think he has a punchers chance because he's a powerful young champion, but I don't see anyone right now defeating Mayweather from welterweight to junior middleweight (147lbs - 154 lbs).

It appears as though you're a very unlucky person. Life owes you a couple of boxes of chocolates :).

Know a guy here who when arrove he walked with a cane, but walking on the sand daily with its natural resistance, he has lost the cane, doesn't even remember where he used it last, and doesn't miss it.
Der Fish

Is that guy you? If so, congrats!

And the DR has some very strong environmental laws, thankfully. It's pretty easy to see the DR/Haiti border from satellite photos:

I'm aware of that. I was answering those who said the wood for a boardwalk in DR would have to be imported - showing that even the USA imports boardwalk wood, from Brazil, which is closer to DR than NJ.

No, not me, just a friend. Fell off the third floor 12 years agoi and living on insurance money and always in pain, but a lot ess so here than in Canada with its winters and all.
Der Fish

Well I wish him luck because losing that cane has given him some semblance of normality which he had lost for a while.

Great story! Love it.

Boxing is my second love, after football. I box everyday. i have three heavyweight bags (water filled...the best! they protect the wrist & hands and weigh just as much as any canvas bag). I've had many canvas bags over the last 30 years...I hate them! All of them. I loath them; they destroy my wrists & hands). I keep one heavy weight bag in Norway, one in the DR, and one in Ohio when i visit my mom. I use speed bags at whatever gym i go to--in Sosua, Gold's gym, before that Platinum. I've been training boxing for around 30 years now. The only time i didn't train was when i worked on ships. Missed it like crazy everyday. Boxing is the best exercise in the world.

Now that i'm as old as Jesus in dog years, i only do about 20 minutes of boxing training a day (4 to 5 rounds), but i do it rain or shine. I never skip boxing training. I've never ran for the simple reason that I hate running. Unless i'm being chased by the cops, i don't run. Period. Unfortunately, over the years, i have to run a lot...but that's mostly on motorcycles. No, in fact, now that i think about it, I don't like running for anything--unless the check is in the mail and post man has skipped my house or someone is screwing my redhead, then i'll chase them down for money.

I've boxed a lot of people over the years--mostly alcoholics, children, and women--but mostly my alcoholic brother and his friends (my brother got second place in the Ohio Tuffman competition while drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon in the corner) --just for the training. Alcoholics are easy to beat, and so are children...women are not so easy!Alcoholics are slow! I like that. But i've never boxed anyone as an amateur boxer simply because, frankly, i hate the idea of having to train for more then 30 minutes a day unless sex is involved. I'm lazy. I'm a sloth, i'm gluttonous. And I'm not right in the head. Oh well. It's never stopped me from having fun!

I worship chocolate, beaver, coffee, and motorcycles...not necessarily in that order. It depends on the time of day and whether or not i'm feeling lazy.

Anyway, I hate exercising for more then 30 minutes a day for the simple reason that it becomes too much like work. And I hate work. I hate everything associated with work. I hate even pronouncing the word W-o-r-k. It's a nasty, dirty, fun-depriving four letter word...and i hate four letter words. So, i hate cardio training or conditioning as well. It usually requires running. Did i mention i hate running? Oh well, basically, I'm gluttonous, beaver chasing, motorcycle loving loser. Big time. But i wouldn't have it any other way.

Yes, thats the beach! I went with my girl about 2 Months ago, brought a cooler of goodies, and sat down on their lounge chairs. About 20 minutes later, a guy came over and said that we had to pay 200 pesos each to use them..Well, I sat on the cooler, Antonia took the chair...Is there another beach in Puerto Plata that does not charge for their lounge chairs?? Antonia wants to go to the beach in Sosua maybe next week, any info there?? Sorry, have no idea how many beaches each town? has..nor the names..

Anthony

Try the Puerto Plata area. we don't have chair renting businesses here.

LOL, yes Frank, its time for your meds now.. :) Do you live in puerto Plata?? I created a thread last night if anyone knew of a boxing club here in PP. I figured to give training a try, maybe help some young kids and who knows, maybe find some true talent..Boxing has haunted me for many years, I miss it that much, always in me, part of who I am in a way..And, in my current condition, it may help to get some mobility back while helping others..

Thanks!

Anthony

If you don't run, do you jump rope?
