Good morning!
While I've been on this site more than once, I've finally decided to log in.
I currently live in SD as a teacher, and I find I just don't fit in.
Color, tatts, female with short hair... you name it.
Figured this was some place to feel some kind of norm.
Are there meetups in this country? Book clubs in English?
I want to be social, but my Spanish is manso. Argh!

Wecome to DR1! It can be challenging to live in another place and it's not easy trying to adjust!

Hopefully someone can suggest some type of recreation for you.:)

The price to be considered "normal" is too damn high in this country. With time, being different starts to feel like a blessing.
Welcome!

Welcome to DR1
There are English speaking book clubs in SD - one that I know of was organised by - but not exclusively for - Carol Morgan school teachers. Visit the Helen Kellogg Library - the volunteers there are likely to have information.
https://www.facebook.com/KelloggLibrary
Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings from 9-11:30 AM

I know how you feel. I live in Pennsylvania, have natural hair color, no tattoos, no metal in my face, my earlobes are not stretched out, and I feel out of place here, like a freak.

Its hard to "fit in" when your behavior is perceived as rude and anti-social. There things you maybe doing that you consider to be hip & "different", that Dominicans will consider to be anti-social, rude, and low class.

For Example: ......The "TATTS"...... Tatts are considered to be anti-social, low class, and rude - especially on a female.
Women who have them (visible) are assumed to extremely low class or Prostitutes...........

Solution: cover the "tatts".

As far as the hair, there are plenty women here will short hair -not a problem (unless a weird design or color)
Your color: a non issue here since there is every spectrum under the sun here unless you are maybe identifiable as possible
being Haitian OR Asian/ Chino. - but even then, typically a non issue.

You might find you fit in better in places like Casa de Teatro, Parada 77 and other spots in the Colonial Zone. Also, the Cinemateca in Plaza de la Cultura, Sal?n de los Espejos in Palacio de Bellas Artes, and some of the clubs and pubs in the Gustavo Mej?a Ricart area.

Colour should be no issue.
Dominican women are traditional "feminine".
However Dominicans are very easy to meet and social.
Get out mix and mingle, it will help your spanish.
Don't isolate yourself with anglophones, it's not why you choose to be on this island.
Enjoy the spice of Dominican life, you'll be easily accepted.
