I'm coming down to the DR the weekend of Halloween for the Jazz Fest and I'll be arriving on Halloween. I was wondering do the Dominicans participate in Halloween or is that just an American tradition?

On a commercial level Halloween is celebrated in the DR - businesses decorate and sell products, restaurants and clubs hold theme nights, and some schools celebrate it.

Not all Dominicans are that keen on Halloween. Some see it as an over-commercialised tradition that has been imposed from outside, which threatens to displace home-grown culture. Others are vaguely aware of its pagan roots, and through convoluted logic, conclude that it is a form of devil-worship.

There is usually a costume party @ Classicos in Sosua, I assume by your name that is your home base?

I was just talking about this with my wife and how we miss Halloween; so we will probably have a little party for the kids where they can dress up and have fun. Though I am aware of the pagan background of the Halloween, I think it is a great day for kids to have fun; something which I think is lacking here in the DR.

kids here have fun every day. dressing up and making an event out of a day is for countries in which children don't usually have any fun.

The kids school has a party on Halloween. I have seen a number of bars, restaurants, etc..that have parties for Halloween. My MIL makes cookies shaped like pumpkins, ghosts, etc...and sends them to the local school. However for the majority of people here, they do not really consider it a "Holiday". But I do notice that it kind of begins the Navidad season here.
