Received a Memo today from Migraciones citing certain laws that came into effect since 2006 through 09 that basically says beginning Oct. 20 this year, they will begin visiting businesses and checking the legality and residence compliance of those businesses who may be hiring foreigners illegally. Nothing new there really.
While it's obvious this may be directed towards only construction or free zone employed workers, it has a slant that suggests they will also be going after management types of foreign descent who work in hotels, casinos, resorts, tour operators and other types of businesses. Even restaurants or whatever.
If you're aren't a current resident or DR citizen, up to date, it might be worth looking into.
The memo is not cut and pasted here because they've covered that base, saying it is illegal to do so.
There are tons of foreigners working in the tourist industry off the books, as it were.
Just saying, be careful and aware of that initiative.
It might cut your extended vacation shorter than you'd hoped for.

you must be kidding me here with this one! lol! Cracking down on these people is worst for DR. DR lives on Hotels and other foreign service industries. Frankly, i wonder who is writing these laws? A country whose livelihood depends on foreigners, but that same country does not like foreigners. What a coincidence!

all of this is directed against haitians, i am pretty sure. granted, a white gringo may suffer a collateral slap but there is nothing here that cannot be solved with money.

As someone mentioned this is always targeted as Haitians but I wish they would enforce it properly. After all every other country does it, protecting their workforce - but at the same time they should train their workforce (IT, English) so they can also do the better jobs as well as gringos...
