Good day DR1ers... off to the Cibao region and looking to explore east of Santiago next week...looking to stick to the area for 10 days and avoid the capital this time... any suggestions on how to fill my time? looking to stay away from anything where I might find tourists.... I ve heard San Francisco de Marcoris is quite a decent place to visit.. " a real Dominican city" I've heard said.....or Cotui, I hear the oldest city in the Republic... not interested in beaches, happier sitting at a bar and shooting the breeze ...something off the beaten track....thanks for any pointers on cheap hotels, and such...

In SFM you can stay at La Caoba (near casino I think $75), then the Libeno (around $30 or so) on the park, and El Jaya hotel (close to park) for about $12. You share bathroom facilities at El Jaya but it is clean and secure. I used to live in SFM in the late 80's and have been going back since. For me it is more about the people I know there and not sure what to tell people to do for fun. Restaurants around park are nice but the El Dorado is the best. Basketball and baseball teams if in season. El Polo and de Moya are my breakfast or lunch places if needed. Not overly pleased with the Patio on the last trip. If you like walking up the side of a mountain to a cloud forest, Fundacion Loma Quita Espuela will take you for a day trip. I spend most of my time around the campos and can tell you where some good swimming holes are located. Salcedo has some nice murals to see as you go around town and Tenares is worth a visit, small but clean and nice. Cotui used to be nicer and has grown quite a bit over the last twenty five years. Their is a lake called Hatillo past Cotui which is okay to see and I have read there is caving in the area. I do not do the late night entertainment thing too much in the area, but I know the venues start very, very late when there is live music.
