Question About Security Cameras

Whenever someone asks for advice about improving security where they live, security cameras are sure to be suggested. I've suggested them myself. But I've been thinking about them and wondering how much of a benefit they really are.

They don't prevent intrusion, they don't protect you or your property from an intruder.

What they do, maybe, is to give you a look at who did you or your property harm.

But then what? What are the Dominican police going to do with the information obtained from the video?

Has anyone had an experience where intruders were photographed by a security camera and the police used the info from the camera to make an arrest and get a conviction?

Has anyone had an experience where they got photos on the camera and nothing was done with
the information?

It's all about prevention! The more security features you have the more likely people will move on to another House unless they really want you.

I love Cameras because when i am home I can see all around my property and house and know if there is anyone outside so i can get ready for a Creep!
I certainly didn't get the cameras because I thought I would catch people or show pics to the police. Maybe?!

I like knowing what is going on in My house when i am not home as well so i don't come home to a surprise!

People around me don't have bars on their windows, no cameras and no huge walls preventing people from getting in and guess what they get robbed! I think anyone here who does not do everything possible to keep their family and property safe is an idiot!

dont let people see the tv and laptop boxes and every thing might be ok. i think keeping someone in the house when you leave is good and keep the gate locked and have a shot gun on hand

You should use a system with move detection, then it will help to protect you as well before someone is in your house!

Security is like an "Onion", it should have a lot of "Layers"!!!!!!It is seldom, if ever, that a home, or business robbery is not an "Inside Job".
At least in the sense that a "visitor",an employee, domestic or commercial, gives their "Ladronaso" friends a "Heads Up", as to what is inside, where it is, when you will be "Out", even a set of your keys, or leaving an "entrance" open.
I suggest, a high wall/fence if you don't already have one, if you can afford one.
Lots of "Lights",some "ON" all the time at night, using "Foto Cell Control", some that turn on with a "Motion Detector".
I say the cameras are not much of a deterant, but can give you an "Early Warning" if you are at home, especially at night, and you have the monitors in you bedroom.
To have anything that of clarity thatyou could use to later "Catch" the intruders you have to go "Top-Of-The-Line" and spend a lot of money.
"Leaving" someone at home", at ALL Times,is the "DOMINICAN SECURITY SYSTEM".
LOTS of BIG dogs will keep out most thieves! (Note, and a Chihuahua, or other "Yapping, high strung, "Alarm Dog")
Bars on the windows, CAN slow the thieves down, but not much.
They just put a car jack between the bars and pop the welds.
If all these measures fail, do what I do, Unlock my Model 88, Mossberg, 12 ga.
I did just that last night at 2:30 am.
I heard two quick pistol shots, that sounded like they came from next door.
Now that usually means they heard " Something, outside, and fired two "Warning Shots" into the air.
I do that too!
It makes your house less "Inviting" to anyone who has come to "Visit" in the "am"!

that reminds me:
a tia of ours has a security system with cameras. her house was robbed. and the thief has formatted hard drive in the computer recording those images. cleaned it up, basically.
miesposo and his computer specialist friend tried to recuperate the recording but to no avail.
forgive me this rough explanation, i am not very technical.

in any case it was clear that someone from inside the house was involved, that the thief knew where the computer was. all staff was fired afterwards since it was impossible to tell who was involved...

A shame for the innocent/honest ones, but it had to be done.

Like Harley said, I would think of it as a deterrent to have a visible security camera setup. But at the same time, it also screams "we've got good stuff in here". And if someone from the inside is involved, you're toast.

We try to downplay everything at our home in DR, because of where we are. No big flat screen TV, nothing flamboyant to catch anyone's interest. If I actually sold my home in the US and moved to DR full time, I'd want to live differently, and that would mean a different location with different security.

there is some truth in what you say, that visible security measures tell a tale of the riches inside. i think those visible measures should not be too much in your face. we have a very tall wall (about 2 meters). the gate is from solid metal sheets, you cannot see what is inside. bars in all windows, double or triple locks in all doors. two really big dogs in the garden who go nuts at any sounds coming from the outside at night. then there is a security system in place.

none of this will stop the thieves. but it will slow them down. we have armed police patrols going around day and night. one call and they will show up. they have killed thieves before. they have no mercy. and slowing down the attackers means having time for that one call.

none of this will stop the thieves. but it may discourage them. there are other houses, easier targets. why bother with a difficult one?

After my neighbor fired two shots, I didn't have to, that was enough to tell any would be thieves to look elsewhere.

Having the best secured house in your neighborhood, reminds me of the two guys walking in the woods, they surprised a "Mama Bear" and her cubs.
She charged them!!
One guy says to the other guy,.."You will Never outrun a bear"!!!!!!
They guy responded, "I don't have to outrun the bear, I Only have to outrun YOU"!!!!!!
Your security measures don't have to be Perfect, just better than your neighbors!!!!

My next door neighbor has a camera system installed, they broke in ad took two safety boxes and the hard disk recorder that was recording the images from the cameras. They were sure it was someone from the inside and some weeks later it appeared it was one of their employees also being a cousin of my neighbor. I suggested him to make sure the images are recorded on a remote server (his cameras also give a view on my house...:nervous:)

Ken, there was a case in Luper?n quite a while back where a boater had the security camera images and turned them over to the police. The guys were recognized. The police went to shake them down for part of the loot. End of story.

criss, does DR have stand your ground, home is your castle laws? I was trained to shoot, maintain and respect guns as a boy. If you get burgled or robbed and shoot the guy don't you automatically go to jail and then they sort it out later? Does a rule about proportional response carry much weight, for example an unarmed intruder vs. armed homeowner? Years ago a japanese tourist was shot and killed as a trespasser. It was a tragic mistake, but there was no punishment for the home owner because of the state. As I recall it was TX or FL, but I may be confabulating more than one event. So, not a question about gun ownership, but the reality of using a gun for self defense in DR? whole lotta trouble here in the People's Republic of Taxachusetts.

After my neighbor fired two shots, I didn't have to, that was enough to tell any would be thieves to look elsewhere.

lOCO, that,s WHY I left MASS. after 25 years!!!!!
If I were just a "Gringo" living here without DR support system, ie., "CONNECTIONS", I probably wouldn't want to shoot anyone.
In the USA when you kill an intruder you may be tried for that, depends on what state.
Even in "Stand Your Ground" state laws!!
I go by the "OLD SAYING"............................
"BETTER TO BE JUDGED BY 12, THAN CARRIED BY 6"!!!!!
