Santo Domingo.? More of the cocaine smuggled to the United States is passing through the Dominican Republic and other Caribbean territories, which represents a shift in which drug traffickers are returning to a region they largely abandoned decades ago, the miamiherald.com reported today.

According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, a full 14 percent of cocaine bound for the U.S. was trafficked through the Caribbean in the first half of 2013, double the 7 percent that came through the region during the same period a year earlier.

Vito S. Guarino, special agent in charge of the DEA?s Caribbean division, based in Puerto Rico, told the miamiherald.com that ?what we?re seeing is that traffickers are increasing the amount of cocaine in each shipment.?

The Dominican Republic, the largest transshipment point in the Caribbean, received 27 metric tons of cocaine in 2013, up from 22 tons a year earlier, according to the DEA figures.

The increase in the Caribbean came even amid an overall drop in the amount of cocaine shipped in the hemisphere, suggesting smugglers are confident they can take advantage of weak security in the region, the paper points out.

These numbers are highly hypothetical. 22 TM last year, 27 TM this year, might as well be the other way around or double the volume.

What ever happened to the Super Tucanos that were going to sweep the drug smugglers planes from the skies and sink their boats?

They dropped the guns and radar so the Tacanos could carry more coke. They drop it over the Yolos and report the boats not carrying the coke.

The so called "war on drugs" is a farce and a hypocrisy. Where do you think the money comes from all that south american dollars parked in the banks on brickell avenue on miami come from? the shopping sprees? the way overpriced condos with stupid maintenance fees? the torres" in Santo Domingo....all those Harleys and high end Cars????.... Majors and Captains driving BMW X5s, while many people like me included are breaking their backs to buy a 13 year old used toyota pick up?....They know who the big boys are.. both The DEA and the DNCD... they just pick and choose the little corner peons and the ones that don't play by their rules... Huge budgets for DEA, Homeland Security,DNCD, ATF... all that bs...to buy more planes,guns,radar,...and the game goes on. For God's sake Pablo Escobar is dead almost 20 years...who are they kidding? what are they gonna stop?
NOTHING.

Tucanos. Bwaahaha!

In this case the pen is truly mightier than the sword. They can take ALL the black market profit out of the drug trade with the stroke of a pen. Make it legal, regulate the trade through the pharma giants and tax the shiit out of it just like tobacco and alcohol.

They won't. Know why? Some of the biggest crooks of all are holding the pen.

its a simple formula, they put out an increased number which will directly corelate to how much more money the need to combat the issue. so if there is a 20%increase in drug smuggling they would need a 20% increase in budget...new desks, new chairs, new SUV's..

These numbers are highly hypothetical. 22 TM last year, 27 TM this year, might as well be the other way around or double the volume.

Man you would never believe how a gubmint can waste money unless you work for them. They treat thier equipment like **** and **** and moan why everything is broken, spend more than half the time calculating how thier seniority entitles them to more overtime, spend another quarter of the time paying the unions who pay the politicians who make the budget.
About ten percent of the time is actual work and the rest is complaining about other agencies who get all the glory.

The Drug business is huge for law enforcement. Its the rally cry next to domestic terrorism, by those words the budgets skyrocket the fact that both seem to be increasing has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that you cannot fix every problem with money.
Nothing is funnier than when some dept head is up testifying with his big sad eyes crying about a lack of funding. Prick has been getting 24/7 overtime for the past six years. LOL

I would highly doubt the DR even flies them unless the US is paying for the maint. Lotta money to keep aircraft flying
