I live in Santiago
I have rented a house in Santiago. The house has a water cistern.

How do I evaluate its condition? I think they need to be cleaned but I have no experience with them.

pump the water out. check for filtration and cracks. hire one or two people to scrub it with cloro. refill with one or two trucks full of water. such maintenance should be given regularly. if you are renting i presume the owner should take care of this?

That's exactly what we do. Usually once a year.

This year we'll throw in a chlorine tablet once a month too.

I know of lots of instances where the cistern is emptied, dried, then painted with cistern paint. When I had my cistern, I had a chlorine injection pump that would pump in a drop every minute or so, more than enough to keep it sanitized.

What exactly is that paint called in the store?

we never painted the cistern but the corners/edges are sealed with cement.
